1000 mile service??
Machine posted that he bought his SL 55 in for a 1000 mile service. I am also a new owner and nobody told me about a 1000 mile service. I now have 1800 miles on the car . Any info on this??

You should be guided by the ASSYST system which tells you when to take the car in for an Oil (A) or Maintenance (B) service. Some people here like to change the oil more often but with the quality of modern synthetic lubricants, it's not necessary. There's no 1000 mile service like there used to be when lower viscosity lubricants were used on a new engine to ensure proper lubrication during the bedding in process.

I could be wrong, as I don't have access to it, but I'm pretty sure that my 04 55 doesn't mention anything about a check up between 1 & 3000 miles. Where did you see it? Thanks.

Could be of course that this is something new. Given the various reliability problems Mercedes has as a whole, it's possible they want the car back early in its life to do a diagnostic read-out to check for any issues. Whether they would change the oil as well is anyone's guess.
Two conflicting trends here over recent years. Increasing reliability of drivetrains due to improved metallurgy and lubricants; Decreasing overall reliability due to the complexity of the cars electrical and hydraulic systems and the more systemized approach of having different components of the car interact with each other.

Don't know if this applies for Mercedes, but many cars today that have a 1000km service do not have an oil change. It is just to check that nothing has faltered and that everything is going OK before it is driven for many miles. They usually just check stuff like brake pedal play and clutch adjustments, and many other little checks. Could also be that cables stretch after they have been used after they are new, so they may have to retension them. Really though, its not that important, they have just scapped that service on the locally made cars here just to advertise that the car only needs to be serviced every 15000km. But, since its free and its an expensive car, better be safe than sorry.

Pablo,
It's in the service manual that came with my '05 55. I'm pretty sure that my '04 had the same thing because I did bring it in for a courtesy check after a thousand miles or so.
