Atlanta Drags SL65 11.694

Within two days we have now had two SL65's on drag strips.....

One in CA and here in ATL

My best of the day was as follows:

RT .214
60' 1.790
330 4.974
1/8 7.588
1000' 9.818
1/4 11.694
MPH 117.83

We had a blast with a couple other AMG owners from ATL. Will post pictures and a video shortly.

I made 8 runs throught the morning and ran around 11.7 top up and down. Even ran a 12.1 with a friend in the car.

With drag radials this car should run in the mid 11's easy traction is still a huge problem. Any more than 2000 rpm at the start and I was up in smoke for the run.

It was a great time out at the drags today. My best run of the day (SLK32) was against Schiznick. I ran 13.254 @ 106.66 he ran 11.921 @ 117.12. The SL65 in an awsome car.

Schiznick thanks for letting me borrow your extra helmet. I still have it, let me know the best way to get it back to you.

Welcome gkwhite! We missed you today at the drag strip.

I find that I use the cruise control more than ever to keep my speed in check on any open road.

It is really a blast. My best time in my SL55 on the same strip was around 12.7 so the SL65 is a full 1 secnd faster in the 1/4 mile.

With some more work on the launch there is more to be found.

Love the black on black combo let me know if you want someone to tint those window, I have a guy in ATL that will come to you and does a ton of MB cars.

430, hang on to the helmet for a bit and we will figure something out.

Regards,

Schiznick

Great car and a great time!
One question though, why is the trap speed so much lower than Treynor's 65?
Thanks

Very cool. Heard that wettnauer in Germany has a chip. I am thinking of getting one. I have not done any timed runs, but I am glad you guys got such awesome times.

Any of you guys in Southern California?

JEEZ. Very very nice 60' there shiz! I was launching off of idle and just lit up my rear tires, so you've either got the magic right foot or much better track prep Looks like we can share the record book for now - you get best stock ET, I get best stock MPH. Very very nice. It's insane that these cars are so fast bone stock.

I -am- curious about the disparity in trap speeds. Can you post your timeslip, and...
What octane gas were you using? [I got 123 MPH on 91 octane, 124-126 MPH on 100 octane]
Temps at the time you were running? [mine were 70F at 8pm, dropping to 64F by 9:30]
Elevation of the track? [mine's sea level]
Rear tires - size, brand, and PSI? [285 RE050s @ 29 PSI]
Also, were you running with traction control on or off? [always on, otherwise I just spun]

Treynor,

I was very curious about the MPH as well. I saw your post before I left for the track yesterday so I had an idea of where I should be.

For the runs yesterday I had about 1/2 a tank of 93 Octane. I was going to try and run 100 but at $6 a gallon and a huge line of people I decieded to pass.

My runs were between 11 AM and 1 PM temp was around 70 degrees with high humidity. We were afraid that it was going to rain all morning as it was very overcast with 500 ft celings.

Track is around sea level +-300 ft.

I am running the stock Bridgstone RE050's as well at 32 PSI.

I tried running with and without traction control as well and various launches from 1000 RPM to 2500. the low 1000 seemed to work the best as 2500 was a tire smoking joke.

The track prep was good this time be it has been better. I have run my old SL55 here before where you could launch it with no traction control and 3K with just a slight chirp of the tires.

The track actually went away a bit throught the morning. My best run was my second one with traction control off and a cautious right foot. After that I could not get the car hooked up at all in the same lane and showed the crowd what it was like to drift the first 1000 ft in a Mercedes.

After that I went back to traction control and stayed around 11.77 - 11.98 for the day.

Manual vs Auto vs Shifting in auto seemed to make no difference.

Ran a 12.1 with a 225 lb friend inside (before they told me no riders for a car under 13.9 ha ha ha) and a 12.2 with the top down.

What were your 60 ft times? Could the difference in MPH be based on better hook up in the 60 ft times? I was thinking if a car is spinning more in the first 60 ft that when it does hook up that it could accelerate a bit faster from that point forward. Just a therory, I am no expert on this!!!!! Since I saw your post in the AM were were all trying to figue this out on the track throught the day.

BTW, it is great to see that I am not the only one willing to take his cars to the track! What a blast.

A special thanks to the other 6 AMG's that were out playing with us Sunday it was quite a blast as usual. The track event was put on by a group of Import owners and was not busy and very fun. Everone was suprised to see a bunch of AMG's and loved the cars.

I am happy to report that our AMG's held up well against the other imports. My SL65 posted the fastest time of the day on the track. In all fairness, I had 8 more pistons than most of the other cars! I got a bit worried that my time would fall when I saw the SRT Neon with Slicks a cage, wheelie bars and 30 LBS of boost..... He only ran a 11.98. My fun kill of the day was a Black Turbo Porsche that was running low 12's, great owner just out having fun thrashing his car as well.

All around a fun day.

Schiz - this will indeed be a mystery. Possible reasons for the disparity in MPH:
1. Humidity - our weather was fairly dry, yours was apparently quite humid. That'll cost you a small amount of power.
2. Temps - low/mid 60s and dark means intake temps are significantly lower
3. Octane - I pick up 2 MPH with 100 vs 91.

There's still several MPH unaccounted-for. What trap speeds did you see in your SL55 at this track? What trap speeds did you see for other stock cars there? I'm wondering if this track has the older timing lights which measure your speed in the 60 leading up to the finish line, as opposed to averaging 60' before to 60' after. All cars would show lower traps at a track like that.

Ben,

You are going to love this.... I pulled my time slips from my SL55. These were from March 28th 04. Same Track a bit warmer with sun shining down.

I made 7 runs on 93 octane fuel. After looking at the slips I remember asking myself these same questions about MPH based on huge changes across the runs.

BTW, Reynolds is a NHRA sanctioned track so I would like to think that all of their timing equip is up to grade.

Here are two ends of the spectrum for my runs that day, one low ET and one high MPH. First two are my SL55 the third is the SL65

R/T .187 .501 (I know) .214
60' 1.870 1.937 1.790
330 5.326 5.416 4.974
1/8 8.166 8.249 7.588
MPH 84.92 87.31 94.47
1000 10.616 10.698 9.818
1/4 12.664 12.731 11.694
MPH 108.25 114.40 117.83

I never shut down until way past the finish line so I know I am not letting up early.

1.79 60' times are wild to me on street tires.....

I am still looking for my E55 slips from Reynolds. If I find them I will post them as well.

Very interesting indeed.

One question - my traction control would always engage at launch, and would kick in again at 3500 but (usually) not drop the power too much the second time. My MPH depended on that - when I spun badly on the 1-2 shift, I ran 118-120 MPH.

So... where was YOUR traction control kicking in?

Hello Schiznick

Nice to read that you had fun with your SL on the track. Unfortunately this is not very common here in Europe - only normal "track days" ( driving on race tracks) are known - and I had the possibility to join some of them. Unfortunately the SL65 is a little bit "overweighted" and therefore not a race car at all.

Coming back to YOUR POST ......

6 USD for one gallon of gasoline (100 Octane) - and this in the United States ? or did you fill your tank here in France .... ?? :p - just kidding... but seems to be a little overpriced ! ( here I am spending 1,15 € for one liter of "Super Plus")

I tried several times as well to drive my "silver arrow" without ESP (traction control) on a race tracks - and unfortunately I do not have the driving experience to beat my beast. Do you have traction problems when launching from stand still ? - means do your ESP light is flickering ?

kind regards from France

Walter
