Introduction and looking for some parking brake advice

Hi everyone,
I bought a 2003 SL55 AMG on Monday. My wife and I love it so far and it's in great shape.

At 2023 Deutsche Marques 11 - All German Car Show

I actually won best 2000s Mercedes! I was pretty stoked, but then it started lol.

I don't think it's anything to major, but I drive it today and it started making a brake grinding noise, but didn't sound normal. I had my wife drive it while I stood next to it and that when i realized it was the parking brake on the driver's side. I have it on stands and in neutral now and when I roll the rotor forward it makes the noise... Something dragging on the drum. When I roll it backwards, it makes a noise for a second like it's flipping the other direction and then no more noise.

I unfortunately don't have any E18, so I'll be running out to the store to get that. I did pull on the parking brake release lever and that's when I noticed it was attached to nothing and just falls out of the dash. I popped the side cover off of the dash so that I could see the parking brake release mechanism and it's like the cable is too long.

That is with cable attached and pushed in as far as it will go before making cable pop back out of the handle.

That is what happens if I push the handle in farther

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Mark

Sounds like you need to take the rear rotors off and see why the cable isn’t returning.

I am going to do that tomorrow. I didn't have an E18, my kit stopped at E16 :-(

It's odd though that I haven't used the parking brake at all and it started doing this.

Any update on this? If you've not used the parking brake before this is bizarre, it does look like the cable has possibly stretched, I do think once you remove the rear discs, you'll get a good idea as to what's happened.

Well... what I found out yesterday when I got the E18 bit was two things:

1. This is 100% accurate :-)

2. Sasquatch tightened my bolts that hold the caliper on. I have a pretty endless supply of tools and I eventually through the towel in for the night yesterday. I don't want to use heat on it, so I was trying my Rigid 1/2" impact, Snap-On 1/2" air impact, breaker bars... nothing. I had to have a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter on my impact and I know that robs torque. I'm picking up a 1/2" deep E18 today and will give it another try tonight.

My plan for now since I don't use the parking brake on cars often is make the noise stop and then this winter when I need projects to keep me sane, I'll replace everything to make it work correctly.

Oh damn, that's disappointing, and yes... that picture is 100% accurate and reminds me of when I replaced the bushings on my control arms. I hope you can get this issue resolved, I'm sure once the discs are off it will all make sense.

Well, I got it off with a HF Impact lol.

I found something loose inside the drum area... I don't know what it is. I can't find a spot that looks like it would go there. I took the other side apart to look and didn't see anything that looks similar. Anyone recognize this?

If you look inside the drum area, it's sitting at the top.

Is it possible you have aftermarket wheels, and or longer wheel bolts? These can cause this sort of issue.

The wheels and wheel bolts are stock.

If I look at a hardware kit, I do see the clip that was in there. See the image below. Every video I've seen does not show this clip being used.
