I would get any PCV problems fixed as they can get worse. First, if the PCV is completely clogged, the buildup of pressure in the engine can blow out seals. (Hmmm maybe that is why your crankshaft plug leaked?). Next if the PCV system is "too open" the engine can start burning excessive oil and cause you to run low on oil at a very inconvenient time.
I don't know the part cost and labor for replacing a rear shock on your car, but $5142 sounds excessive. I suspect most of that is the price of a new shock from MB. I would look into finding a rebuilt one. You could pay for the rebuild and the "core", get the new one installed and then return the core for a refund. On our earlier (R230) cars with the ABC shocks, the cost of a rebuild is around $1000 USD; don't think they are even still available new, but when they last were, IIRC it was around $3000 USD.
