Hi folks, writing in on behalf of my uncle who owns a 2014 SL63, which has developed an odd symptom. The car exhibits an intermittent hum/vibration which can be felt in the seats and the steering wheel. The best way I could describe it would be a pump type noise, like a sump pump or vacuum pump noise. It happens sporadically, more so at idle or slow speeds. It adds resistance to the steering. It usually lasts for 10-20 seconds at a time. Nothing specifically seems to trigger it. No warning lights or messages on the dash. Vehicle has approximately 25,000 miles. Any ideas on where to look? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi All,

New to this and hoping someone can help me. I'm having exactly same issue here.There is an intermittent humming noise accompanied by a vibration that seems to be coming from the front/left hand side area. It comes and goes and can be felt in the cabin (steering wheel and pedals). It can only really be heard when the windows are closed. It can be heard when stationary a few seconds after starting the engine, and also when moving. The engine itself seems to be running fine. Noise isn't very loud but is certainly noticeable. Has anyone had a similar issue or know a fix for it? Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem on my 2013 SL63. Do you have the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension? On my SL one of the pulsation dampers failed, this made the pump sound terrible. My dealer replaced the failed part under CPO warranty. This fixed the noise and vibration problem but introduced a new one, now I had a smell of hot fluid after driving it. I thought at first they must have spilled a little hydraulic fluid during the repair and it would eventually stop smelling. That didn't happen, it kept smelling and there was no sign of leakage anywhere. I checked the ABC fluid and it was very burnt looking (brown and it is supposed to be green) and burnt smelling. I drained and refilled the fluid in the reservoir once a week for a total of 5 times and then replaced the ABC filter as well. All is well again. I'm pretty disappointed at the dealer, though I was a dealership tech at one point in life and I do understand why they dislike doing warranty work.

Thanks a lot for your help!! I think this will help point me in the right direction. Hoping the repaid doesn't break the bank but will see how it goes. It's funny you mention the smell, because I have actually been smelling a burning smell since this problem started, but didn't know if it was related. I suspect it is. I'll get it looked at.
