Joe I believe it is aluminum that has a pattern pressed into it and then coated with something but not positive. I love that I don't have the wood trim it just seems more modern. Someone mentioned on another thread that this was on SL600's I believe but wasn't available to order on the U.S. model SL65's

FYI - there were a total of 11 SL65s produced with that trim option. Two of those were delivered to Canada in 2005 and there also was one delivered to the US in that year. Report shows years breakdown.

Well that's interesting. I wonder if that is a specific code to the trim I have, or just a generic code for any out of the ordinary trim?
@paulmr More stats reports for various year ranges.
I believe the B&O stereo is standard on all R231 SL65s. The counts for Country and Paint Color are for both RHD and LHD, this report doesn't distinguish for those counts. The L and R Option counts give you the proportion of total vehicles.
Hi Joe. I just bought a 2018 SL 65 AMG. It’s a one owner car with 5,200 miles. I was interested in documenting as much about the car as possible. I see from this thread that you have created the best available data on these cars. From your attachments I can tell that my car is one of 2 produced ww with 297U color
code and 501A + X17 interior codes. Would love to get one of your reports vin: WDDJK7KAXJF053404. The original owner bought it in Newport Beach. He said the dealer indicated it was one of the last cars coming into the US.

Beautiful color combo! Here are the Build Sheet and Stats Report from my database for your vehicle.
According to my data there were only 7 more SL65s delivered to the US after yours before production shut down. From the Stats Report you can see that in the 2018 model year there were only 48 SL65s shipped worldwide and 22 in US. Rare indeed!

Thank you very much for these reports and the information! The car gets a lot of attention when it's out of the garage. The original owner had the entire car wrapped with the proper film to protect the matte finish and preserve the original look of the car. Makes it much easier to care for.
Joe, thanks so much for the information. Sounds like a lot of investigation on your part. No plans to part with it anytime soon. Runs well, just wish MB would fix the Magic Sky. Kent

You're welcome. It was definitely a lot of work to gather the data, but I'm retired and needed a hobby.
To the best of my knowledge, I have all available data out there for SL65s, both R230 and R231. The R231 data was especially tough. I bought a book recently on it from an author who has written about many prior generations of the SL. Each book he's written typically provides production numbers, but he said MB would not give him data on the facelift R231s for his book. My best guess is that MB doesn't want us to know the rather low sales figures for the later years of the R231.
Here's what I have for your SL65. As you can see, the R231 facelift SL65s are extremely rare! Only 48 produced worldwide in 2018, which was the last year of production.
