the reason they're coming out with special edition is...

because the new model is coming out? So will these be a bit cheaper?

I guess this is like the Silver Arrow version of the old SL.

It's unclear whether this is coming to the US or not. They've been available in Europe for several months. I assume the US will get some special/limited edition, but maybe not this exact setup. Normally, the special editions don't have a cheaper base price, but they do include a few options at no extra charge. Usually, the upgrades are cosmetic and don't cost much to Mercedes anyway (i.e. the wheels, the paint color, the interior trim, badging, etc.).

The last SLK limited edition in the USA in 2000 included 17-inch EVO wheels, Obsidian Black paint, "Limited Edition" floor mats/ badges/keychain, leather shift knob, stainless steel exhaust tip, and the CD/phone package. The only real value was in the larger wheels and tires which cost M-B very little in place of the regular tires, and also CD/phone package and of course, the real purpose was to deplete the supply of Startac phones before the Timeport phones became available. Still it was a good value if you liked the color combination.

Usually when MB puts out "special editions", its a prelude ......

to the introduction of a new model.

that is true they did it with the CLK,

correctly called the "Final Edition"; however i have to bring up the point of the speical edition in 2000 or 2001, i dun remember the year, if it was the 2000 it makes sense, because the facelift in 2001, but if it was a 2001, than y did they have the special edition than? because they were not coming out with a new model than

The last SLK limited edition was for the 2000 model year in the USA and it was specific to the USA (or maybe it was offered in Canada too, but I don't think so). The 2000 model year was short because production of the facelifted SLK began in March 2000 instead of July. You're right that the purpose of the special edition was to boost sales before the facelift SLKs started selling in May.

How do you guys feel about the aluminum panels?

I prefer the "jewelled" or "machine turned" panels of the SLK230 which gives it more of a retro look to match the retro-styled dashboard.

The EVO 17" wheels gives it a refreshed look. Not bad.
