Resonator delete

Im planning to remove my resonator on my 98 slk230. Some people have told me it makes the exhaust note alot louder but others have said you can barely hear a difference. i dont want a annoyingly loud exhaust tone or a tone that is high pitched and raspy so im not sure if i should do this.

Can anyone give me some input on removing the resonator?

Hi,
I have removed the resonator on every car I owned but this one. It will usually add a little bit of better gas mileage, and a few (like 1 or 2) horses. As far as the sound goes, every car was different. I think it all depends on how big the stock muffler is, if its relatively small, you will hear a difference in sound. If its a pretty big muffler you won't really notice much. I did it on the following: Honda accord 91 (cat removal it didn't have a resoniator), Toyota Celica gts 03, Monte Carlo SS 01, 97 Sebring convertible. Basically bring it to a muffler shop and they should only charge about 50$ to chop it off and weld up a straight pipe. Your just going to have to see if you like it or not. I'm not sure about the back pressure in the exhaust with this engine being supercharged so you might want to check with somebody that knows more about modifying a mercedes exhaust. But differently keep us posted on what you do. I have been thinking about doing it but don't want to chance anything. Merry Christmas!

I didnt think the SLK230 had a resonator, only the end muffler. Mine has CATS and a muffler. When I had the CATS rreplaced with larger generic ones note changed substantially. Bit louder and deeper.

There is no resonator.

I removed the catalytic converters and replaced it with a straight through pipe.

I drove 1km from the exhaust place and turned around and went back.

Incredibly loud, tinny and power gains were marginal if there were any at all. I did not notice any difference.

We then fitted a large straight through muffler where the cats used to be.

It was slightly quieter but still too loud and very tinny.

I then went back and had the factory cats put back on.

Do not do this mod. No power gains are noticable and the loud, tinny note detracts from the car and seriously does not suit it.

You also need the cats to allow the Lambda sensors to function correctly. AND to remain legal for polltion controls. BIG fines in OZ if you remove.
I had my 2 parallel cats replaced with larger bore generic ones when one fell to bits. No gains noticed but exhaust a bit deeper.
