SLK/R170: Odd A/C Problem

Odd A/C Problem
With the AC running cold (42 F) on both sides, and without notice, the driver's side will start blowing hot (125 F) while the passenger side still blows cold. I can play with the driver's temp dial and get it to start blowing cold again. When I try to get it to change playing with the dial, it won't always do it. I suspect the potentiometer is the culprit (I'm an electronic tech.), but because I can't get it to fail consistently, I'm not convinced. My local shop told me it's the control unit ($1000+ because it houses both sides...ouch), but the dealer could diagnose it for sure...at about 4 hrs. labor...quadruple ouch!
This would be little more than a nuisance in most areas of the country, but in Vegas at regular 100+ temps, it's a killer!
Has anyone else experienced this? I searched the threads to no avail.

Check your mono valve. you may have the two valve type; If so than a complete valve replacement should cure the problem. If this has been going on for some time than you may have to replace the main climate control module. Good luck

Duo valve is open by default. They can get stuck open.

HVAC control unit suffers from dry joints and dirty potentiometer, easy to fix, resolder and spray pots.
ANy HVAC that looks like the SLK one will fit, ie , some E amd C class ones.
Later SLK32 use the E class black face ones. I have fitted a C class one to mine. Plug is in diff spot but fits OK.
2nd hand from Potomac etc about $100.
