Interior Paint fix
Greetings,
I had the same problem with an all black interior. Lived with it for 2 or 3 years. Looked terrible. Went to a reliable body shop in town, got a quote of almost $500 to re-paint the console. Called the nearest MB dealer in Lubbock TX and a private individual from there could repair almost anything in the interior (specializes in leather repair). This dealer uses him a lot.
To make this long story a little shorter (sorry) he drove `120miles to repair my interior and charged me $85.00! I almost fell over!!! No one else in Amarillo, TX did this, so he would come here every couple of weeks when he got enough requests.
So, someone who knows his technique in your area can probably fix yours inexpensively as well.
It doesn't look perfect, but it looks a hell of a lot better than it did. I'm very pleased with it.
Good luck.........Quick..

not stock.
I have the tan / black interior.... my entire console is peeling, and the bottom is black as dyou all know...so it looks B.A.D! Ive decided that for now, it would be better to just finish peeling ALL the painted parts and leave them in there natural black finish..... it will look cleaner, and for now fix the problem (permenantly)... if I ever get around it, I would love to wrap everything in suede or leather.

Peeling console solution
Checkout this thread. It's the best idea if you want to keep that OEM look.

Its a very common issue. I picked up a '99 SLK230 with the oyster interior and the console looked nappy as hell with only 10k (verified by carfax) on the odometer. I got a great deal on the car, but in the end I just traded up for a year newer with solid seats...I like the look of the oyster better, but its its just going to peel like, I'll stick with the black
