SLK/R170: 2001 SLK 230 top issues

2001 SLK 230 top issues
I got a 2001 SLK230 from the dealer today as a loaner car, and i (of course) wanted to put the top down. the red slider did nothing but blink, so i opened the trunk to make sure there was nothing wrong back there. didn't look like it. i tried putting the top down again -- nothing.
i opened the trunk again and tried taking the luggage cover out of the two notches in the side and "stretching" it out a bit... then putting it back. this seemed to work.
i had to do the same thing in order for it to close, too. is this a normal problem or what? kind of annoying.
