SLK/R170: Battery cable question

Battery cable question
On my 2001 SLK R170 200, I have had the battery swapped out. The new battery has lasted around 3 months and is now flat. Once re-charged at home everything runs great again. So I noticed when I was refitting the battery that there are 2 cables attaching to the positive terminal and only one to the negative - leaving a thread sticking up that looks like an attachment for a cable? What is this?
I'm concerned my battery is not recharging correctly. So either a problem with alternator or a missing cable?
thanks,
Rob

The cabling is normal -- one ground but two positives, for the starter and everything else.
Does you battery die when the car hasn't been driven for a day? That would point to a drain, usually because one of the CAN networks doesn't go to sleep when the car is switched off. That in turn can be caused by one of many different modules going bad: a seat, door or window controller, a SAM, etc. There are many computers involved in electrical distribution on these cars and diagnosis is best left to the dealer. There's way more involved than an alternator.
