Neeeeeewbie....

Thought I would say Hi!..we just acquired a little yellow 98 slk230 A5(auto)today.Only thing it does not have I think is heated seats.Trying to determine the packages and what was included.I wasn't too thrilled about it(small car to say the least) but for 11k and she smiled from ear to ear then I figured it was an easy deal.

I'm a truck and boat guy but she has had a 95 V6Camaro almost since new so you can imagine the proud smile she has now.

I know nothing much about these little things but I broke down and drove it and was pretty impressed by the fell and how quiet it is.Top down same thing.Love that little button!1st time she did that I knew it was all over....plus hold the loud pedal and the little bugger scoots out nice.Enough to get the tires spinnin at least in 1st.

Anyways, fill me in on the tricks and pitfalls if ya wouldn't mind too much..I have been browsing a good bit reading up so far.

The center console was of course peeling and worn as I have read. That was actually fixed today.I had a vette so I know the routine on the rubber junk all to well.

How about a pulley swap?....

Bigger set of wheels for sure..some AMG stuff would be
I'm Terry btw...

ASP has a pulley kit for you car, it's about $900 or so for the olders SLK's. Check with Lee, asp@aspracing.com. Putting in the AMG engine would be the way to go for 349hp, but it will cost more than the pulley.

Reading up on the pulley sway is a little more involved than a 03 cobra...that magnetic clutch is funky.I'll pass..

She has mentioned wheels and a SL grill aong with body color lowers.

Which wheels area nice 17" or 18" direct swap?

What does the magnetic clutch have to do with a pulley kit, I don't understand, please explain. The ASP pulley kit replaces only the crank pulley, no magnets, no clutch, no funk. Takes a second off 0-60 time, makes it faster than an SLK320 by a long shot. Also relocating the MAF (part of that kit) gives you smoother accelleration like the newer, post 2000 SLK230s.

As for wheels, get 19's if you are going all out, they look pretty good on that car. I did 17" take offs from a C230 for my kid's SLK, $320 with tires.

I was assuming it was the blower pulley not the crank...that would make it a simple job.Any other concerns with changing the pulley out?

The only concern I have with the 19's are the weight.I drive a Yukon Denali that runs 22x10's/305-45-22's.It suffered greatly in the acceleration department. It handles far better and actually tows much straighter but they are heavy and it pays the price.

Seems to me the 18's would fit the bill and be generally cheaper vs the 19's.I do appreciate the response though.Only way to learn about these little guys..

I have some instructions on my website for doing an ASP pulley on a C230, same motor, different air filter but it gives you an idea. On yours you will have to change the plugs, FPR and relocate the MAF, not a big deal, all bolt on and included in the kit.

You can get lightweight 2-3 piece 19" but they are expensive. Heck, there are cheap aftermarket cast wheels that are 17" that weigh more than nice 19" wheels. The problem is people buy $200 19" cheapies when they should be looking at the $800 19" wheels that are forged. As you can see above, the 17" look way better than the 16", the 18" will look even better. The problem is the larger you go, the less rubber between you and the road, which means harsher ride and more risk of rim damage if you hit a bump.

I almost think some monoblocks would look great on it.No way is she gonna spend $2-3k on wheels.I would get the red headed glare for even suggesting it.

What's the big deal with moving the MAF..I see it kinda tucked under there.

I just noticed today the back-up lights are not working at all.Odd that both wouldn't work.Time to do a search on here I guess.Tails function perfectly other than that. What's with the two clicks to the left on the light switch.Turns either side of the signals on...odd to me.

The stainless roll bars sounded real good to her as did the SL style grille. The $900 for a little more punch went over about like a fart in church...this is her car so my bad.

Gotta do something about that black muffler hanging down there...just looks goofy and sounds worse...except at WFO.

I'm just learning the quirks of this little thing...I'm a bit skeptic to german cars so be a little patient with me.

The engineering is not what I am used to..

welcome

I would just leave it all alone for a while. Let her drive and enjoy it.

I have modified a lot on mine but I also liked it bog standard as a driver.

Reverse switch would be my guess on the reverse light issue. As they never illuminate as I watched it.Doubtful it would be both bulbs.I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it is under the shifter cover?..any tricks to it?

I just wanna do the wheels and some appearance mods.

My buddy has a 06 GTi the little 4cyl turbo.and is talking all kinda crap about how he is gonna smoke this little slk. He's no clutch artist but can drive okayish. Is that thing gonna rape me or is the Vdub gonna get a lesson?
