Help, my top won't go down!!

I've got a problem that I know somebody out there has already solved. I've got a 99 SLK 230. When I try to put the top down the drivers side of the trunk won't lift up enough for it to work. It appears that the passenger side is trying to go up, just not the driver side. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this work on hydraulics? If that's the case there should be solinoids controlling the cylinders. My hunch is that a solinoid is either stuck or bad. Am I on the right path??? If I am, where can I find these solinoids and how do I tell which one controlls the drivers side of the trunk? If I'm off in left field will somebody direct me? This is our first Mercedes and I'd like to enjoy it.
Looking forward to some great wisdom..............
