I've seen SLK's with 19's that look good, no problems. Just make sure the offset is correct, that's where people make mistakes and tires rub.

Im running Front 8.5" x 18 225/40/18
Im running Rear 9.5" x 18 255/35/18

Yokohama S drive AS01 (prev Kumho Ecsta - great tyre)

Offsets are 35mm
Springs are about 1/2" lower due to going down one par size front and rear from what was on it (you need to look)
The wider rims gave more neg due to external loading so I had to put a camber and toe kit (Kmac) on the rear to keep the wide tyres from wearing the middle all the time.
(still have to unmount tyres and swap to opp side of car to even wear every 10k or so.)

I get used to get a small amount of rubbing on front lips on turn over a bump so had the lips rolled slightly.

I agree with Bazzle. I wouldn't run any bigger than 225/40-18 in the front and 255/35-18 in the rear.
