1998 SLK230 Interior Flaking - Need some advice!!!

I have had the salsa interior of my 1998 SLK230 replaced twice (under warranty) and now that it is out of factory warranty and under extended warranty no such coverage. Not paying thousands of dollars for another one. I need to disassemble the center console (mainly around the glovebox and the emergency brake), remove the portion of dash which surrounds the passenger side A/C vent and remove the door handles to have them all re-painted (had Sherwin Williams Automotive custom match the paint for vinyl/plastic) hopefully without any further problems. They ordered all the vinyl/plastic cleaner and prep so hopefully this will take care of an on-going issue for the "Salsa" group. Thanks.

Hi,
The best way to do it is find an auto upholstery/convertible top/ custom type of shop and ask them to re dye your interior. This makes all the little common chips go away and your car will once again look brand new inside. This is a fairly cheap fix too.

My interior is doing the same thing 1999 slk 230. I have thought about how to fix this and went from real leather to vinyl spray. I have found that you must remove all the old stuff with some citrus based stuff and then use a silicone remover like 3M makes and then spray what ever you want to try on the plastic. Other companies make a paint prep for plastic but I have used many 3M products and found them all very good. I will wait until I am in the middle of winter and do not want my little car in the ice and snow to do this repair. I will post then on how it comes out. I did find some Douglas leather but it was about $300 dollars for the hide but the finest stuff I could find. That is allot of work to do the real leather but it would be very cool. I will most likely do the vinyl paint. The key to getting a good finish is the prep work. Get some printers gloves the white cotton ones so you do not touch the plastic after you remove the silicones and other contaminates.

Try this Web site...several others have used "Dr. Vinyl" with great success for their problematic interior paint chipping.

...should be able to locate a shop in your area from this site.
good luck
