SLK/R170: Has anyone tried replacing the fuel tank ?

Angry Has anyone tried replacing the fuel tank ?
Some idiot prised open the fuel flap and butchered the nozzle to my wifes fuel tank just before Christmas so they could syphon the £10 of petrol (not even SUPER unleaded !!!) - Their hose must have been to big to fit in the bend so they simply used a crowbar to flare open the entrance to the tank !!!

Looking on the MB parts machine it looks like it is all one part (£500) so it looks like a full tank replacement for me

Has anyone here ever attempted one or know what's involved or should it be sent to the dealer ?

Before you attempt this you may want to call your insurance company and see if its covered.

Yes all one part

I havnt removed one but looks straight forward to me thru rear panel in boot.

Uh yeah, it sucks to change a fuel tank in that car. Call your insurance and file a claim. Let a pro do it, so you don't have issues in 2 months.
