Does the early '98/'99 SLKs have Variable intake-valve timing?

Variable intake timing

Yes, all M111 engines have this feature.

W203 & W204 3.0L 4matics & MR2 Supercharger

Which is really weird because it a blower motor and there is always positive manifold pressure?

Variable intake cams

They reduce emmissions and fuel consumption at low to medium revs; the new M271 engine (also with supercharger) has also variable exhaust cams to reduce temperature load on exhaust/cats.

Also remember that the motor is available without a supercharger in other countries.
