SLK/R170: Trans service???

Trans service???
Does anyone know if the trans can be services? My dealer said its permanently sealed...no dipstick. My friend (Mercedes mechanic) says I still need to service it...from the bottom. And to replace the filter? and gasket. What are your experiences?

They're "sort of" sealed. The seal can be removed and you can buy a dipstick to check the fluid level.
"Lifetime fluid" is marketing garbage. I'm sure the fluid will last the warranty period very easily, but I find it hard to believe that changing the fluid won't significantly prolong the life of the transmisison beyond that.
I'm probably going to change the fluid myself right after the warranty expires, assuming I keep the car that long.
I found some info on how to do it yourself over at mercedesshop.com.

I have changed the trans. fluid. You or your guarage might need a special fluid guarge to test the fluid level.
A bolt under the transmission oil pan can drain the fluid.
Response is quicker after changing the fluid, you may feel it.
