Crumbling lower dash panels-PIX

As requested here some pix of what is happening on an otherwise mint car with 40k miles. Very very sad situation. Any ideas out there on what can be done....

Perhaps a previous owner put a protectant that contained silicone on it.

correct silicone and other cleaners destroy the dash panels... My wife had a 05 crossfire with 7k and the panels were scratched..... also did you ever have the drivers taken apart... the panels are very easy to break and never fit right again... Check a used parts place for new panels

I looked into this years ago when it first started happening to my car. I can't recall where online I found the information, but I discovered that this peeling action happened to most of the early SLK models. People were posting that it was a factory defect (not a recall though). Some folks had found a company that would re-coat the panels with whatever material is used. The pics I saw of the "after" shots were sweet. I'm not certain though where one would even start to look to find a company that would do that sort of work. I am also not certain what it would cost, but I'm sure it's not cheap!
