Just got an crappy barn find money pit. SLK

You would think that SLKs are way too new to have a barn find but good old craigslist proves the impossible every day. I just got a fairily rare 1999 SLK230 sport with a 5 speed manual. Its crappy, but it cost $5000 w 121k.

The good: It runs great, tranny is smooth, the alignment, brakes and fluids service were just done by the dealer. The top works fully!!!! The seats and dash are in great condition. The original real AMG wheels are in great shape. None of the facia or sport kit is ripped or scraped. other than the hood/top the paint is still pretty good

Now the bad: The hood was peeling so the owner tried to paint it with a rattle can, in a silver that is not even close. So thats about $500 or so.

There is a intermittent beeping noise when driving with the top down. looking for a quick fix to that one, ie which wire do i dike off just so it dosen't make noise? or if its a cheap fix im interestedin doing it the right way.

The interior is peeling, i expected that though.

the ASR BAS light is on? Brake switch?

AC dosent work, In Arizona. it was 109 yesterday, so I set aside 600 bucks to have that fixed immediately.

It's filthy so the pics I took make it look terrible. He lives literally on a ranch way out west. I get it tonight and i think ill be impressed once i clean it up.

I can already tell the mods are going to start rolling once i get the major stuff fixed.

Not a bad find at all, i've been looking for an older SLK as a toy and have not found one under $8k so for $5 in that condition, well worth it! Enjoy!

Smile Barn Find- 1999 SLK 230, automatic

Just got my barn find about two weeks ago. Has 62k miles (verified by MB). Looks like new. I'll post pics when I figure out how. The bad is the drivers door is ever so slightly out of true. A/C not working. Low side on compressor reads 100#. Cruise not working. Have SRS and ASR lights glowing brightly. Otherwise car is OK. Paid $5400, spent $150 to get detailed and $550 for new tires. This week it goes to MB for an "A" service, alignment and general look over. Hope yours runs as good as mine. The '99 is a classic in my opinion. Will update after the service and hopefully have pics posted.

Happy motoring

Follow-up Barn find

Found out A/C compressor was by-passing. Independent shop wants $1300 for a complete new system (Compressor, drier, etc). Brake switch caused the cruise to not function. Just returned from a 3k mile road trip with one issue. Found the fuel filter had never been changed. Replaced and car runs like a rocket on steroids.Gas mileage averaged 32 mpg.
