SLK320 sudden auto-braking on highway

I am writing for my son, based upon his description in his 2001 SLK 320 (in the Air Force and out of town), so trying to help. A few days ago, at about 70 mph on highway, driving at just a slight road angle toward the left, the right side brakes applied suddenly and of course pulled the car toward right. He handled it and all was ok, but very dangerous. This subsided in a few seconds, then BAS/ESP dash light went on and stayed on.

At MB aftermarket service shop, mechanic said codes pointed to the YAW rate sensor (which makes sense to me with research done so far). On the invoice entered:
FOUND FAULTS WITH N64 YAW RATE SENSOR. SENSOR TESTED OK USING DAS COMPUTER. (I believe DAS is their service center name. Son did not get the actual scan codes; maybe can.)

The mechanic quoted $1100+ for the YAW and labor, which, while ridiculous, does match stories I've read. HOWEVER, he was reluctant to fix and take the money, since he had not heard this problem matching the auto-braking symptom. Thus, he recommended a second opinion. (He did charge for the diagnostic.)

While we applaud his honesty, does this make sense to anyone out there? I am no mechanic, but this sympton and potential solution sure sounds logical and similar to other threads. Do we need more experience? While the cost is high, this is clearly something that we would not like to re-occur.

Finally, the brake light switch was replaced about a year ago. Does the 2001 SLK320 have separate YAW and Lateral sensors, or are they combined? He quoted 5 hours labor to replace the YAW, assuming this is the problem, does this seem accurate?

Thanks in advance.

The sensor can be changed easily, its inside of the center console behinde the shifter.
The attachments show where and how to.

P.S.
The last link in my signature is very usefull to SLK320 owners, its the Crossfire service manual (same chasis engine etc etc as SLK320)

not a merc
I dont even need to see the fault codes, if the car brakes itself, replace the yaw sensor, common problem..

Good luck
