Yes, unfortunately the stock radio is backlit only when the lights are on. You can solve this problem by having just the fog light on all the time or by replacing the head unit with an aftermarket one (almost all of them are backlit all the time)

I don't believe that changing the headunit will void your warranty. Things like Wheel/tire combo, bodykits, radio, etc., do nothing for the driveability and maintance of a car and therefore should not void your warranty. I still do all my warranty work without a problem.
