Recirculate jammed on

The re-circ function of the heater/ac unit in my 98 SLK is stuck permanently on. I've had the car in at the dealers and they've checked the control unit which is fine.

I have the feeling that it's just physically jammed. How easy would it be to get to the unit and check it myself?

I had the same problem about a year ago. The faulty parts do not trip error codes in the computer, but I insisted that the tech femove the fresh air filter and watch the flap. When it didn't budge by pressing the button, he became a believer. The parts replaced under warranty were:

210-830-07-72 Temperature Sensor
202-800-18-75 Vacuum Element
202-800-13-76 Vacuum Control

My car fogged up to the point that I had to drive with the windows open in frigid weather. The heated seats helped.

It took several days to repair and they had to dismantle the dash, which rattled a bit for several days after until all was settled again. Good Luck.

I have the same problem now it's getting a bit cold outside - except I dont have heated seats!

Just a couple more questions ...

Was yours a 98 model too?

How did you get access to the filter in order to see the flap?

Thanks!!

Mine is a '99 sport, but the internal systems are all the same. The fresh air filter is located under the glovebox and above the passenger floor area. You get to it from below. I seem to remember that there are pictures on PerioKid's site: www.slk32.com Give it a look.
