SLK dash peeling?
I was detailing my Mom's SLK over the weekend and noticed certain parts of the dash peeling. Anybody else experiencing this?

after the detail with Klasse AIO and P21S

My Mom's '98 SLK has 48K miles, would this still be covered under warranty? Thanks for the replies...

I thought all 1998 SLKs were out of warranty! Maximadave, I have the same SLK w/ black interior and exterior and same peeling problem. Right now, I am researching a paint kit sold off the net. But is this covered under warranty? My car has only 37K miles!!

if you can show that previous out of warranty cars have this problem and mb fixed those under warranty they will fix it also to maintain good will and future purchases. even though mine is still under warranty i went loaded for bear with reprints from this and other mb forums and they gave me no trouble at all

'98 are defentley out of warrent. 4 years 50k mile, what ever comes first, and even if you have starmark warrenty, they don't cover interior parts(like cracked dashes, pealing trim, etc).
If see interior spray kits on the net, they don't look to bad, what do you realy have to loose, it can't look any worse.

I set up an appointment with a mobile vinyl touch up guy that will come to my Mom's office next week and hopefully correct the problem. I'll let you guys/gals know what happens....
I also called the local MB dealer and confirmed to me that some SLK's do have this problem and if it is under warranty (4yr 50K)MB will replace the dash panels, etc. for free. Unfortunately my Mom's SLK is a '98 with 49K miles. Just over the warranty

Find someone in your town who does Vinyl repairs. I had it done on my car, and it only cost about $100. Was well worth it, gave the car a fresh smell, and looked great... But don't count on it not happening again, because it will!
So you'll just have to deal with it.

mine has a cream interior and peeled around where the roof control is and on the drivers side door handle........dont buy paint kits get a trim repairer to come over to the house and colour match and paint it professionally. I had mine done and it was matched perfectly

My 1998 SLK has a serious peeling problem in the interior. This is a design flaw and Mercedes should fix the problem. IO have requested that the service manager review this. I think there are grounds for a class action lawsuit. I have seen two other slk's with a similar problem.

No doubt we could start a class action lawsuit. The SLK dash peeling problem is occuring on almost all 98 and on cars. The members over at the benzworld forums are QUITE familiar with it.

My wife's 98 SLK with the light gray interior is constantly chipping, revealing the black plastic underneath.
I got a white and a gray vinyl spray paint at autozone and "mix" the paints myself in a glass shot glass till it matches perfectly. I use a fine-tip modelers brush to just fill in the chips perfectly.
After a while it is no big deal to do some touchups as part of a Saturday driveway detailing.
I like the idea of the vinyl touchup expert coming out to repaint the whole thing. That would make sense right before we put in on the market to sell...

Boneatnik: Do what we did... buy the new SLK350!
...but, in case you don't have $50K laying around, I'd call a vinyl shop and see what a repair/repaint would cost, and compare that to a vinyl dash replacement bought directly from Mercedes, or a good replacement from a junk yard. Price the install from different sources, too... you might find significant savings versus a Mercedes dealer mechanic rates... even a body shop can possibly do the work and find the parts for you much cheaper.
Good luck!

Good advice
Thanks Doc. I will look up a vinyl shop. In the meantime the theory I've come up with, since no one else seems to have this problem is this: when the dealer "corrected" the peeling oyster paint problem under warranty a couple of years ago, they may have used a solvent or something that would cause the dash panels to fail like they are....
