SLK/R170: Signal in mirror conversion

Signal in mirror conversion
I have a 1999 SLK230 - I put the mirrors on with the turn signals in them.
However, now my auto-dimming driver's mirror is freaking out - it dims in full sunlight - and the wrong times at night - et al.
Anyone know why it could be doing this? I feel I rewired everything correctly.
