SLK/R170: SLK 230 Engine Tapping Sound

SLK 230 Engine Tapping Sound
Hi I have a 99 SLK 230 that has about 35000 miles. There is a tapping sound coming from under hood someing like a squirrel and a hammer. It only makes the sound while under load while driving. I have tried other slk 230 and they also have the same sound. What is it and is there a way to stop it or reduce the sound. I would like to only be able to hear my exhaust note while driving and not have the hammer crazed squirrel under my hood.

As a new owner of a used 98' SLK230 (with 33000 kms), I had posted the same question a few weeks ago... then i went to a dealer and a friend to really listen to that noise. The verdict is that tapping sound underload seems to be very normal for all the mercedes 4 bangers. So I am blaming the noise on my lack of experience in mercedes cars and going to live with it.
btw, are you getting a "buzz" on your HVAC panel during acceleration?
Other than those 2 things, i really enjoy the car.

what type of fuel are u using?
it could be knocking or pinging, ie. engine running too lean. Could have disatrous effects if not corrected.
don't want to scare you, but I came across this while I was playing with the boost on my previous car.
so yeah, might have to look at the supercharger.

Hi,
I am using Chevron 92 Octane, how do I check for carbon build up? There's no check engine light or anything... But my car has only 37,000 kms on it, previous owner just had full service done on the car before i bought it.

gotta take it in...they will lifet the engine cover and look. I dont know how much lifters cost to replace, but it is usually an easy fix (they slide on in most cars) but if the lifters go bad you can ruin the engine....
Anyone with more technical experience please help....I am simply restating what I have heard.....Chevy has a huge problem right now with the Silverado and the lifters....Wall Street Journal had a huge article on it....
