R170 Headlining Replacement
The headliner fabric has been removed due to heat and I need to remove the headliner board to reattach. I am following advice from Pelican Parts but they say "the top is programmed to attempt to close about every six minutes". My problem is that it does it in about 6 seconds - no time to remove screws. I've done extensive searches to no avail so Any suggestions are welcome - all I can think of is pulling the fuse when it gets halfway open.

Hi Guys, I bought my yr 2000 SLK 230 automatic nearly 3 his week ago with the intent to reverse years of neglect and update it a little with some technology for this decade. I will post photo later as the car is midst repairs at the moment. I am retired and was looking for a project between overseas holidays. My wife and I generally do an overseas trip each year and research our family history. Otherwise we have three sons who need our attention from time to time. I hope you guys can help me through a number of projects with the car so by next summer (southern hemisphere) we can enjoy some weekends away in it.
I eventually got the car passed inspected for registration transfer last week, the main problem being lower control arm bushes needed replacing, two new tyres and a problem with the rear left brake light. The lamp holder had burned out most of one contact with the curcuit plate which also had a burn through it. As I could not get a replacement lamp holder had to wrap the remaining contact with an extension from the crimp section of a wire connector - it worked for now anyway).

There is an ongoing safety recall on the brake lights due to their propensity to burn contacts. There are online sources to determine if the recall has been applied to your car. If not, an MB will replace both assemblies for free.
Not sure about the top issue, other than to say many headliner failures are caused by a leaking hydraulic cylinder. I'd be tempted to run that past the guys on the SLK forum.

My research suggests that the recall did not happen in Australia. On the headliner issue, there are no problems with the mechanicals, just the glue which gave up holding the vinyl on.
