slk spuddering

the last couple of days my car --slk 230 98' starts to sputter and has a small back fire when I floor the gas pedle. I noticed a loss in power also. I changed the spark plugs around 7months ago. I just put fuel injector cleaner in today. any ideas on what it could be? thanks

You might have a clog in the fuel filter or line. That happened to one of my cars because I let the tank get so low so often, the filter started picking up little pieces of crap in the bottom of the tank.

water in engine bay

I also had the same issue as you. I also put injector cleaner in the fuel tank. But I think my issue was water somewhere in the engine area. The engine bay had been power washed by the guy I bought it off and think he jet washed it a bit too close. All is good now.

I had essentially the exact same syptoms, cleaned the MAF and it worked better for a time, but about 10,000 miles later I ended up having to replace it (dealership price around $550 installed).
