Hi,

I was just curious i wanted to ask people - if they had the choice between the SLK 55 AMG or the SL 55 AMG - which would they choose and why?

I would go with the SLK55, the tail on the SL55 is too heavy and the SLK55 is 1000 lbs lighter.

When choosing between these cars most people seem to have gone for the SL for males. I hope Mercedes are listening before they decide to do the facelift to make the SL look like the SLR...will that make the SL too girly and make the SLK look too much like the SL...interesting times...

I actually like the SLK more but would have to be crazy to say that I'd take the SLK55 of the SL55, since the SL55 is much more powerfull and expensive, but price aside I'd go with the SLK, the SL doesn't seem as sporty to me and I you get more looks in the SLK, I might be wrong though. I think it's bad for us SLK owners if the SL gets a nose job, since we would no longer look like we are mocking the SLR but more like the SL and the SL like the SLR, even though we got the nose job first. I don't know if anyone knows this but while searching Ebay "search SL", I found a seller that sells a replacement hood for the SL, a SLR style hood. So no one has to wait for Mercedes to release that new nose or have the old one. A do it yourself SLR nose is available.

SL 55!! The SLK is a little too small, in my opinoin its a chick car.

SL55 over SLK55 for me... never drove the SLK55 though, but I doubt the SLK has the sound of the SL. just start the engine of the SL55 and you just get a huge grin on your face. not to mention the SL55 is faster, not that it matters since i probably will never drive it to even 70% of its full potential

and yeah SLK is a lot smaller than the SL, esp the trunk space... c'mon i cant even put a driver in the trunk of the SLK without bending it slightly where as i can fit two small golf bags in the SL

the look of the SLK has been growing on me, but I still would have to go with the SL55

the main reason i really like the new SLK is because of the manual tranny. just love it, although i still prefer the m3 manual tranny (not that smg crap)

If I had enough money to buy the SL55 (or especially the 65) over the SLK55, I'd buy a Ferrari 430 instead

girly car? thats great see those with clues will note that old ladies drive SL500s and SL600s. Older men drive AMG Slk55s 55s and 65s. See most women go for a look while the men go for performance. The biggest chick car in MBs lineup is the C class.

actually a slk55 sounds a lot better than an sl55. I work at a dealership that carries almost every type of car and drove the sl55 2003 and it doesn't roar as much as the slk55. Don't get me wrong the sl55 is a great car. No way I'm putting it down. But when you get a chance go drive a slk55 and you'll see what i'm talking about

Interesting observation ... however, the manual transmission is NOT an option on the SLK55. It comes standard with the 7-speed automatic. And to me, that's preferable to the 5-speed that is currently in the SL class. (Have the SL's gotten the 7-speed yet??)

And since money IS a factor, we're getting the SLK55 - just as soon as we sell our SLK350.

In my opinion the SLK is the ONLY MB that does NOT need to be AMG to be a driver's car. (OK so I am normally a BMW kinda guy.)

It's purely a matter of aesthetics. After 10 months, the car's "real" owner (my wife ) has stated that she doesn't like the brown leather interior. We both like the car but she's decided the interior has to go. And we've decided that if we're going to do this, we're going to do it right. Either a NICE SL-500 or order an SLK-55 exactly the way that we want it.

well, both are great cars... the SLK 55 feels a stripped out with minimum luxury .... the SL 55 interior is just gorgeous ... feels like your sitting at home cruising around with total pleasure and comfort and instant tremendous power reserve...

The SLK 55 t me feels more sport... and the sound is great, although the SL 55 sounds great but the K's feels more original coming out from an N/A engine versus supercharged...


now a days I drive the SLK 55 more... I drive the SL when I want more comfort and dont care for serious driving, just the pleasure of just cruising around in comfort versus the K's ... back breaker, I dont feel fully comfortable in the SLK .. I guess its because of my back


at the end , it depend what you want and what are you willing to pay ... but both cars wont let you down.....

I chose the SLK55. The SL55 makes for a great car to cruise around town, but performs pretty lousy on the race track. It is more of AMG's idea of "massive power, tight springs, sticky tires, hope for the best." At least with the lenght/weight of the SLK55, it is fairly well balanced.

If I was going to for something more powerful/larger, I would not have chose a MB/AMG.

haha choosing between an SLK55 and an SL55.. quite a difference isn't it? it really depends what you're looking for in a car, cuz they really are totally different.

but for an SL55's price, i'd rather be driving an aston martin AMV8.

I guess it is an issue of what you really want to achieve. I read responses that are absolutly either incorrect or misleading. The 55 SLK AMG is not a girly girl car or a wannabe 55 SL. I tested both before buying a SLK 55. I have owned in the past 5 years 2 porsche 1 1999 996 and 1 997 S with sport package/ cold air intake and other goodies. I also had a 2002 Spyder Maserati and a 2000 Honda S2000. Today I own a 55 SLK AMG along with a 1969 Corvette stingray big block. I use to race go kart when I was a kid...

all of this to tell you that if you are a car fanatic like me you will realize that the 55 AMG SLK hold its ground against bigger, more expensive cars. If like one post suggested you want to show off or you do not understand a car beyond its sticker price then the 55 SL AMG is for you. You will get more fun from the SLK as you will not feel the weight so much. The SLK drives more like a sports/race car whereas the SL drives more like a touring car. The SLK is purer in its reponse to acceleration and more importantly to cornering. The sensation of acceleration are very much the same along with the fabuleous noice for the exhaust from either car.
Trust me I have owned $100K+ car: this car is well undervalued and can only be appreciated in a twisted road where there you will leave a SL 55 AMG well behind. Of course if Mika is driving the SL that would be another story.
Going out to show off: get the 55 SL AMG, getting the real deal then get the SLK AMG.
