Quick question on break in

Well, I have a nice 480 mile drive back home with my SLK 280 and was wondering what is the fastest I can go? I never owned a MB and not really sure of the breakin period. I-80 will be crazy if I am only doing 65 :P

Don't know about the 280, but the 350 manual was very non specific about maximum speed or RPM. The same manual was specific for the SLK55AMG. It said no faster than 85 mph, and no RPM greater than 4500.

It does say in the first 1000 miles to drive at "varying but moderate vehicle and engine speeds." "avoid heavy loads (full throttle driving) and excessive engine speeds (no more than 2/3 of maximum rpm in each gear). Shift gears in a timely manner. Avoid accelerating by kickdown. Select C as the preferred shift program (automatic) for first 1K miles.)

I think the 2/3 of max rpm (about 4000), not driving it hard, vary your speeds, and don't put your foot on the floor to pass, all make sense. I would assume the 280 is pretty similar.

Good plan, particularly the varying of speed and no heavy power thrusts... Might add to take it easy when first starting out until the engine warms up.
