SLK/R171: Radar Detectors

Radar Detectors
I really don't do a lot of driving but I am thinking
of picking up a radar detector for the added security when I decide to drive more than 10 mph over the speed limit. Any recommendations? TIA

I prefer Escort as the battery powered one is neat, tucks away easily and is less prone to the false positives that V1 has.
If you don't want to use the handle to your trunk, you can get a nice built-in detector than interfaces with the dashboard display.

If you google for this topic, you'll find some really good review articles. Some appear to have a product placement, etc. while the best ones appear unbiased. The Valentine consistently gets good reviews, as well as the newer Escort Passport 8500 X50. There are also laser blocking devices which you can use in addition to the detectors for added protection. If you're up for spending a bigger chunk ($1200-1500) of change, companies (e.g. Escort) make "custom" devices - these have sensors discretely hidden outside the vehicle and a hardwired device is placed in your car wherever you want.

The rearview mirror one is a custom install where an installer will etch out what lights up in the hideaway module into your mirrow. Quite expensive actually.

There is always going to be a debate on which one is better, V1 or 8500. Both are very good detectors, each one has pros and cons. You really can't go wrong with either one. I've had my 8500 for a couple of years now, couldn't be happier. Range and sensitivity is great. Very few false alarms.
