I did get tired of the loud engine noise that enters the cabin and thats still a quirk in the '07 though to a lesser degree. Also having a rag top requires some additional care and maintenance to prevent early breakdown of the fibers especially if your climate is hot and it will stay out in the sun alot; folding mechanics aside I imagine the hard top on the SLK will not require any further maintenance than that of a regular hard top. Since in the USA we get the SLK280 I did not have to weigh power as a factor and the street cost was within 2k so cost was not a real factor either.

I've only had my SLK some three weeks and got off too a rough start. Overall I'm loving the car and do not regret the purchase; only hope I can get the glove box issue resolved..mine suffers from a lever that pops loose often. Its something I can fix in less than a minute but its embarrasing none the less when it happens. I'm going to call MBUSA and ask them to order a new glove box be installed..the dealership I bought from has a very unresponsive attitude toward the issue in my opinion.

As far as being ribbed by friends and collegues about the SLK being a sissy car or the 987 only for folks that can't afford a 911..it'll be much worse on the Porsche side..been there
Mojito, get some rims, springs, and a bodykit, and the jeers from friends/colleagues about the SLK being a sissy car will be replaced by jaws dropping, and panties dropping. =)

As a fan of the SLK but an owner of the 987 Boxster S I may have a slightly different view on this...... obviously asking SLK owners what they recommend is likely to result in a biased view in the same way as asking a bunch of Boxster owners what they'd go for ...... but......

As the original question was asking for a recommendation between the SLK200 and base 2.7 Boxster (987 new model) I would say theres no competition..... the base Boxster wins in virtually every area other than cost, very few independant reviewers would recommend the SLK200 over the 2.7 Porsche and given that choice I'd go for the Boxster in a flash.

SLK350 Vs 2.7 Boxster...... I'd have the 350
SLK350 Vs Boxster S...... I'd have the Boxster S
AMG Vs Boxster S....... if they were equal cost I'd have the AMG even though I can't stand the auto box but as the AMG was $20k more than the Box S I went for the Porsche.

Autoexpress recently updated their reviews of both cars (today) so for an unbiased view they are here:

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carrevi...sbenz_slk.html

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carrevi...e_boxster.html

Anyway both cars are better than most things on the road today so you won't regret buying either...... test drive them both if you can!

I think SLK55AMGs analysis is right on the mark.

Don't touch the 4 cylinder. If you can't get a 280, 350 or 55; go for the Boxster.

I know u give a good point. But 200K is not bad compare with boxster. He need drive to office.

IMO Boxster doesnt look prof in working environment, when SLK still give MB Elegance.

Just my 50cents

????? Both Porsche and MB are prestige makes so surely both would look good in the office car park (if that sort of thing matters!)?????

I think so too... There's no Boxster or SLK in my office car park, and my SLK is going to be the 1st one!

If one wants to impress one's colleagues, the best way is to go for a Rolls-Royce Phantom.

In ASIA SLK only have 200K, 350, 55 AMG.

200K standard cost about SGD 198.000
350 standard cost about SGD 235.000

Boxster standard cost about SGD 225.000
Boxster S standard cost about SGD 257.000

Which nice to spend ?? TQ
Which would equate to :-
SLK 200K - US$ 131,118 or £65,300
SLK 350 - US$ 155,643 or £77,500

So much more in Asia

For that amount, I could get a pre-owned lambo gallardo.

For those prices, I'm wonder if you would even get a shell of a R171 (like a 200K), and then buy the SLK55 parts (engine, tranny, suspension, body kit, etc) and just swap them in. If even a 200K is USD $130k, I can't imagine what the 55 would cost. Doing such a swap would cost max $25k (I don't know how much AMG engines cost) and you would get 55 performance at 350 cost.

This only works for Asia, where this is 100%+ tax on cars. We're lucky in the US.
