DaimlerChrysler AG will sell 80.1 percent of its money-losing Chrysler Group to private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP for $7.4 billion, the company announced Monday, undoing a 1998 merger aimed at creating a global auto giant.

The German-American automaker said in a statement that an affiliate of Cerberus will hold the majority stake in a new Chrysler Holding LLC while DaimlerChrysler will keep a 19.9 percent stake.

i hope it at least means benz will change the manu-matic transmission to shift forward/backwards manually instead of chrysler's auto-stick's side-to-side.

I actually much prefer the side to side way. That way you don't accidentally put the car in neutral under hard acceleration when you think it is in manual mode when its not. I've done that several times with other cars with the forward/backard style.

My other car, a 1997 Honda Prelude has a separate gate that you push the shifter into for manual shifting. Push forward to up shift, pull back to down shift. I find it vastly better than the SLK arrangement and it responds quicker too.

How do you do that(accidentally put it in neutral) with a separate shift gate?

You can't accidentally put it into neutral with the Honda setup.

It happened to me in other cars because I thought it was in the "separate shift-gate" when in fact it was not. So when I pushed the lever forward to up-shift I put it in neutral instead.
