A fast-running V6 sports engine developing 224 kW/305 hp and an optionally available direct-steer system truly bring the bold, dynamic character of the two-seater SLK 350 to the fore. Furthermore, all of the engines in the line-up are now far more economical on fuel and, therefore, emit even less CO2, despite a substantial increase in output in many cases. The new-generation SLK models will be available from April 2008, costing between € 36,503.25 and € 69,049.75 incl. VAT.
Since their first appearance in 1996, the compact SLK Roadsters have come to symbolise Mercedes-Benz’ dynamic brand image. Already a familiar sight on our roads, the second-generation two-seater is to be further enhanced with the implementation of a raft of measures in 2008, the aim being to further emphasise the car’s sporty character and continue the SLK-Class success story by introducing new, dynamic, powerful elements. Some 310,000 first-generation roadster models were sold between 1996 and 2004. And around 185,000 customers – some 60,000 of them in Germany alone – have already purchased the second-generation model since its launch in March 2004 (figures at year-end 2007). This means that total unit sales of the SLK Roadster are now approaching the half-million mark.
The new-generation SLK displays new sporty highlights, further enhancing the appeal of the successful two-seater with the trendsetting vario-roof that transforms the car from a roadster into a weatherproof coupé in a matter of seconds.

hey guys,
I just read the latest news, 2012 is the year for R172
Man, I couldn't tell you how disappointed when I saw the new R172 prototype.
Sorry no offense for these comments, just my personal feelings:
The F1 nose hood is gone, they put back the R170 hood, which I think is a poor design. why are we going back in time?
the front grill is like a C-class, headlights is a copy of SL except added LED on the bottom, kind of copy of Audi's style
Mirror is the same look
no new body style
the interior seats and accessories remain the same.
you call this a new technology???

I've just check out the new Z4, this car has tons of storage space in the cabin area.
my SLK has that dumb 6 CD changer installed and guess what, you can't put anything in the glove compartment box.
don't they think about all these functional things when they design the car.
I also saw the Honda FIT which has no comparsion to the SLK but the storage space design is excellent.

The first R171 came out at 2005 which means the car was under designed around 2003 or so. At that time, there was no such things bluetooth or in car mp3 players.
The new Z4 is a much newer car and it should have much more advanced tech and stuff. It's all about the timing and game. MB has been trying to catch up that part for sure. it's just not the SLK's time yet.
Will I buy a R172? yes for sure if I didn't get something else before that.

I agree that the R-171 development curve started before MP 3 and Blue Tooth but the current sound systems are still inferior to other premier brands. I've had older American cars with much better sound systems. Example: The dummy speaker in the rear of the center console. If there was a good speaker in there I believe the sound would be much better.
I felt like the 2009 SLK did fix some things. The CD changer is now in dash of course. Bluetooth is standard.
I find the standard audio on the 2009s not too bad. It's about 100x better than the standard audio in my 2008 C-Class, really no comparison between them.
I agree though why they put such bad standard sound in such expensive cars? Again I don't have a problem with my SLK's, but the C-class's sounds worst than any junkie rental car I ever get.

wow, R172 expects to come out late 2010
that means R171 has a 6 years life cycle.
can't wait until the 7th year?
what is the matter with the SLK designers?
do you guys think the R171 F1 nose hood going to worth more money?
