SLK/R171: New member New owner New roof problem
In trying to solve my problem I stumbled across this wonderful and informative site

So I have a 10 year old SLK and up until today the vario roof has worked fine, now when i try to put the roof down to enjoy the last days of summer, it unlatches fine, folds away as usual but the boot (trunk) lid refuses to go down over the parked roof. At that point I have to close the roof when it latches back on the windscreen and the boot lid closes fine
Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

welcome to the forum! I don't have an R171, nor have I worked on one yet, but maybe I can share some knowledge from the over 30 brands and hundreds of models that we rebuild and upgrade the hydraulic systems for.
When your Vario roof stops in the middle of a cycle, then you have an electrical or a hydraulic problem. In your case, it is almost certainly an electrical problem with a micro switch not signalling to the controller that it is okay to take the next step (i.e., close the trunk lid).
The trunk lid closes fine when you are closing (raising) the top, so what's the difference when the top is opening and the trunk lid won't close? I would guess that the computer is not getting the signal that the top is down in the storage area. I hope that someone can point out which micro switch indicates the top being retracted, or that you can find this out yourself and post a photo.
When diagnosing an electrical problem during the Vario roof opening or closing cycle, always put yourself into the position of the control module: it needs input that everything is safe and ready for the next step. If that input isn't there, then you will usually find the pump running without the computer giving a signal for the next valve or combination of valves to open and allow hydraulic fluid to pressurize the cylinder needed in the next step.
In some less common cases, the control module will shut down hydraulic system operation if the signals from the various micro switches seem illogical, but that's another story and it isn't the case here.
I hope this helps,
Klaus
