Link is to my post on the antenna splitter located on the driver's side of the trunk of my '05 E55. Hopefully this helps a bit.

Edit: in some cases the antenna splitter may be located under the trunk floor directly behind the rear seat. In other words, you have to reach as far into the trunk as you can and raise the floor up.

bbirdwell,
Thanks for the answer, I also have a 2005 E500 4matic which I retrofitted a NAV unit to years ago and it works great, I updated the disk, installed the bracket to secure the DVD unit and replaced the driver side trunk carpet lining with the opening for the DVD unit and added the splitter. So the other day, I pulled everything out of the Sedan and checked the location of the splitter and it's condition, which is great clean and tight. Do you think the 2005 SLK350 uses the same splitter?

Unknown but I would assume factory parts and design engineers would attempt to standardize as much as possible.

Here's a site with info on the R170 (not your R171):
http://bayhas.com/mercedes/r170/contents/default.htm

A link that might assist (PITA popup every other window but you can still find very good info).
http://workshop-manuals.com/mercedesbenz/

Go to the SLK section and you have a choice of a 2006 SLK350 or a 2005 SLK55, and then check out the antenna control module. The photo is different than the splitter in my E-class but the connections appear the same.

Hope this helps you out a bit.

Hi BBirdwell,
Thanks for all your help and suggestions. From looking at your pictures , I decided to take apart my 2005 E500 4matic and inspect the work I had done years ago. I removed the splitter , part numbers :210 820 2489 WISI , AW09 , Q7/0521, I noted the wire connections and then installed the unit into the 2005 SLK350 , connecting the antenna wire from the Navigation unit, which had some blue tape on it as a marker, to the black terminal of the splitter and then removed the Tel-Aid antenna from the antenna connector which goes to the the GPS unit on the windscreen behind the rear view mirror, the Tel-Aid wire had some red electrical tape on it as a marker, I connected the antenna wire with the red marker to the red terminal of the splitter, the splitter looks like yours with two wire connections at on end and a single wire connection at the other end, I connected the remaining wire from the GPS antenna to the splitter. Closed up everything and started the car turned on the Command Unit and pushed MAP, at first it still read some place in OHIO, with a split screen saying OFF ROAD, figured I did something wrong, LOL, but I also noticed that no SAT were displayed and there was no LON and LAT displayed , I backed the car out of the garage and still nothing, still OFF ROAD, so I took it for a ride about 1/2 mile from my house and pulled over to the side of the road near a lake, all of sudden one satellite was indicated, it took 4 satellites, to orient the unit and it displayed my location. Thank you for the suggestions and help.
