SLK 200K or 350?

Can't decide between 200k or 350. The main problem is the $10k price differential that exists here in Mexico. The 200k is $53.9k and the 350 is $64k. Basically I'm inclined on the 200k because of the price unless someone here convices me that the 350 is a must and then I reconsider it.

So far I have chosen Silver/Red and its arriving in december, 350 on January.

If someone here has red interior pics, plese post, I want detail on the red interior. TIA

Check out the link in the thread regarding European Delivery of the SLK350 for multiple photos of the red interior.

If you don't mind being down about 100 hp and about 2.5 seconds in 0-60 time, save your money (the 200K is listed at 7.9 manual/8.3 auto 0-62.5 mph; the 350 is listed at 5.6/5.5 on www.mercedes-benz.co.uk). I wouldn't call the 200K slow, but it is far slower than the 350.

Also, are you planning on doing any modding? Since the 200K's engine has been around for awhile, you can already find upgrade kits for it (i.e. Brabus, Carlsson), while you'd have to wait a while for parts to come out for the 3.5L motor. Brabus' kit bumps hp by 30 to 193. I don't know how much it costs, though.

2005 SLK350
The 200 isn't available in the US, and probably will not be for a while, if ever. The only real advantage of the 200 is that it's going to be more fuel efficient, but a lot slower. I don't know why you're into the car, but I'm more interested in the performance than the look (but the hard top conv. aspect is a big thing for me).

I drove the SLK230 and was far from impressed. It wasn't really any faster than my Volkswagon, and it has four doors. However, I understand that people buy cars for different reasons.

Simply put, if my mom were buying it, I'd tell her to save the money, since she couldn't possibly care less about eating V8 Mustangs for lunch and putting on a good show against Corvettes. Trust me, when the car comes in, every 16 year old with something remotely fast is going to try to race you. For me, it's well, well worth the money. Would have gone with the AMG myself, if not for the estimated $23,000 difference. If I'm gonna spend that much I may as well go ahead and go with the SL class...

Not trying to flame, or start a war, but that's my opinion...

Car is agift for my wife, but I get to drive too. Looks are most important in this case.

I am mostly a Porsche guy but recognize the importance of a good sedan when it comes to business image. I chose an E320 for the only purpose to transport myself to the office and business travel, I feel the E320 is a very safe car on the raod and brings a good business image. Otherwise you'll see me in a Porsche.

I didn't finish my post as I was called by the building admin to notice me that my E320 was seriously hit, I guess the SLK idea is out for now, Mary gets to stay with her Sharan and Mini, I'll cancell the SLK and is a new E320 for me

Thanks for your advice and comments. I'll keep you posted.

I am not surprise some time we (countries where MB offers 200,350) get confused. Apart from from the obvious technical data, SLK200K gets exactly the same engine and same engine tuning as the C200K. The SLK350 gets the same engine as the S350. Considering the big gap of a cheapest C and the S, I am convinved it is worth that 14K difference.

The SLK350 is faster than the BMW Z4 3.0 , and it is almost as fast as the C55. You will not enjoy 'the speed' from a SLK200K where your Honda Accord can be even faster. The most obvious difference is the SLK350 gets the new 7-Gear Tranny, and the SLK200K doesn't. If you look at the specifications, they are almost completely difference!

Not so strange, actually– the engine in the S350/SL350 isn't the same engine in the SLK350.
The S350's engine is on older design that's also found in the ML350, has 3 valves & 2 spark plugs/cylinder, and actually displaces 3.7L.
The SLK350's engine is a new design that displaces 3.5L and has 4 valves & 1 spark plug/cylinder. The SLK is the first MB with the new engine, and it'll be rolled out across the lines over the next year or so as a replacement for the old 3.2 and 3.7 L engines.

You are right. Sorry for the error.
SLK350 uses a new 4Valve designed engine.

I am from australia, and if u let me choose i would go for the 350, i dunno how it is at ur place, but in here the spec for 350 and 200 are so different, if u make the 200 to have the same spec as the 350, it cost just as much as a 350. Plus the 350 has bigger brakes. The only problem is that if u get 350 here, u have to wait 6 months, where as u get the 200 stright away.

It is a pretty simply buying decision between 200 and 350 to me.
My 2cents.
The SLK 200 behaves the same as C200K, not much a surprise in terms of performance. However you pay much less for the 200 than the 350 with almost everything look the same as 350 except the 350's 7G Tranny.
For sake of performance and fun and money not issue, you will regret to get the 200K. For sake of enjoy the car when it is "fresh" to start have fun with best friends and girlfreinds. How many people care you are with a 200 or 350? Besides, you saved the money, and it is a much easier decision for you to get rid of the SLK200 and buy something else which you might crazy in next year.

SLK200 Kompressor (2005)
fowwie, i'd love to go the 350 but the price difference is quite big. the performance increase is substantial. 8.3 to 5.6secs for the 100km!!

i've got a 200 on order which i receive in jan05. tellurite silver with blue leather interior. been trying to find websites that have info on mods. would like to increase the performance.

anyone know of any mod sites besides the carlsson and brabus ones?

Yes, you are right , not need to check, I wrote wrongly. It is true that SLK350 engine is a brand new engine specially for SLK. The S350/SL350 engine or the E350 (coming) are "old engines".
