2005 SLK350 - firemist red & beige interior
Post Plexiglass Wind Screen?

My SLK350 is on the build list for next week, for delivery to northern Virginia optimistically by the end of March.

The plexiglass wind screen is a dealer-installed option, and that's about all I know of it other than seeing a picture in the sales brochure. Has anyone had this installed on their 350? Does it materially affect the sound system? Does it make the cabin feel any more restrictive with the top up? How much more effective is it than the normally included net wind screen?

Thanks.

...Karl

I have a similar build date as yours. And I am also wondering whether the plexiglass is a better choice than the black sun screen. I noticed a lot of people just got the sun screen instead of the plexiglass.

I have the three peice plexiglass windscreen. I would highly recommend it. The fabric one works o.k. but looks a bit cheap imo. The plexiglass one fits the car perfectly, looks great and works well too. It cuts down on turbulence thus making the cabin quieter and where I live where it's cold a lot, I think the airscarf is more effective. As far as installation, it takes about two minutes to install. Simple as can be. It is pretty pricey, but I think its worth it because it looks like it belongs with the car. I keep mine on all the time , top up or down.

Thanks for your response. Your experience with it and your reason for having it sound like it's something I'll want the dealer to install before delivery. Thanks, again.

Don't let the dealer charge you to install because it is user installable using no tools and about 60 seconds (or less) to install or remove. It also comes with a nice storage case. The look, quality, fit and finish are first class MB. I also keep mine on all the time.

Thanks for the heads-up, Julien. I'll definitely pick it up and install it myself.

The deflector has no screws at all. It just sort of wraps around the roll bars and the frame and glass slides in between. It is very secure. Nice design. To remove it there are little tabs that you press to release the glass. That's it. As far as where to get it, any dealer should be able to order it. It's a Mercedes Accessory. I ordered mine through the dealer, took two days to come in.

I think 450 bux for this is OUTRAGEOUS! It's PLASTIC for chrissakes. Maybe, just maybe it would be worth 300 bux if it were tempered glass.

First it is not just a piece of plastic (Plexiglas). Second you buy an outrageously priced MB (with some outrageously priced options I'll bet) and you are going to complain about the price of this one option (accessory).

I agree with you 100%. People with premium package have rain sensor, but do you know that the rain sensor is actaully on every single SLKs. Just that they have it disabled, there are people in UK that have hook their car to a PC and enable that "premium" feature. Wonder how cheap our car will be if all the parts that we never use are taken out from our car from the start. Such as phone hook ups, cd-changer hook ups, rain sensor, and etc... I bet the price will be more than enough to offset the wind screen.

Your local parts department is the only place (so far) to get it.

For what it's worth, I think the price is rediculous too. But it looks great with the car, fits great and looks better than any aftermarket junk I've seen. When I ordered it from my dealer, I asked them for a discount because I bought the car from them. They gave me ten percent off. They wouldn't unless I pressed for it. Hey, it's worth a try. And anyway, everything mercedes is rediculous. What else is new?

Well, I accepted the price of the car as the cost of vanity and did question my sanity during the transaction. I want and will probably buy the windscreen, but you gotta agree that the price is waaaaay out of line for what it is.

First I would like to say hello, im new. I have been looking at this fourm for sometime now, its great. Now i have a question.

Once one of these windscreens is installed, can one have a piece of tempered glass cut and use it inplace of the "plastic" sheet?

Don't see why not, but not sure why you would want to do it?

And shards of it would look so attractive coming out of ones neck in an accident. It only makes sense if it safety glass which would be quite cumbersome in this application.
