Problems with the new slk

Hi all,

I came across a website which lists the problems of MB in general (http://www.mercedes-benz-usa.com/ ). The stories and problems listed on that website really scared me,
especially because I'm picking up my SLK 350 in a couple of weeks. So, has anyone here ever had any problems
with the current model of SLK (R171)? Maybe we should ask the forum to provide some space so we can share
our problems and solutions?

Thanks a lot.

First of all, these all appear to be with SLK230s, with one exception. My guess would be that these are problems with the initial edition before the 320 came out, since none really seem to have to do with engine issues. Secondly, the car was a new line then, not a replaced, updated line. Finally, all car companies create lemons from time to time. I wouldn't worry about it. If they only have 7 complaints on an eight year old car line, I wouldn't be too concerned. I have had a couple of minor problems, as follows.

From one of my previous posts:

Second, I hate to hear about the module problem. My guess is that it is something simple, but like someone said earlier, they have hundreds of them to fix. For what it's worth, I picked mine up in early October. I'm not sure if it means anything, but my VIN ends in 000033. I was on the wait list for six months and bought the car without knowing the final cost. When it came in, my outside air thermometer read 135. Also, my Airscarf and heated seats wouldn't work with the top down, but worked perfectly with the top up. Both of these problems were fixed at the dealership within a week of purchase, and both have been perfect ever since.

It also came with the wrong Nav DVD, but that was remedied before I left the lot.

It doesn't look like this is common, but like I said, it was all taken care of quickly in my case. The right dealership can really make or break a relationship. I have the utmost confidence in my particular dealership. If you do have problems, always get a second opinion.

It's the risk we all run when making a large purchase. Don't let it ruin the experience!

I do think it's a good thing that there weren't that many complaints about
SLK, especially the current model (but could it be because not that many
people had bought the new model?). I know I'm being a bit too pessimistic
here, but did you read about the complaints on other models, like the
E class and the S class? If those complaints were true, I'd be really worried.

Anyway, I've already spent the money, and I'm determined to enjoy the
car as much as I can.

Thanks for the reply.

List of problems from the slk55 form

I had mine since November 04. My car has been in the service department at least TEN times!
1) MB changed a fog light (seal broken).
2) MB changed a rim (defected).
3) MB changed both side mirror blinkers (seal broken).
4) MB changed one of the mirrors (they accidentally had broken it!).
5) MB removed the seat to fix the seatbelt.
6) The roof is still leaking after a car wash.
7) My Teleaid is still not working.
8) My front passenger side brake squeal. Even though, MB put new pads! I
think the problem is with the rotor being in the wrong direction.
9) Engine vibration.
10) Speaker problems.
11) Seat moves during hard driving.
12) Door knocking noise.
13) HUGE!!! roof noises!
14) Passenger side mirror struggles (shakes) to adjust for backing up position.
15) Still don't have the proper AMG floor mats.
16) I got the Navigation manual just two weeks ago!
17) Problem with the windshield washer nozzle.
18) Problem with the differential.
19) Problem with the steering.
20) Should I go on!
I can not wait to see the day that Infiniti/Lexus/Acura make cars similar to AMG. Probably never!

5) Various Speaker problems with sound systems.
6) Brake squeal at slow stops.
7) Coughing exhaust at start up.
8) Possible electric window and trunk opening issue.

Hi,

I'm really sorry to hear that you've had so many problems with such an
expensive car. This is totally unacceptable, how could MB charge people
so much money for such a problematic car? I've read at quite a few
places that MB and other German car makers put technology innovation
ahead of the quality of their cars, that's why they rank really poorly all
over the world in terms of customer satisfaction, I hope to god this is not
true.

Anyway, I hope that your dealer is nice about it and fixes all your problems
for free.

Good luck (to everyone who ownes or is about to own a MB)

I'm not sure that's an entirely accurate picture for most folks. I've had my car for two months and the car is perfect, rock solid.

the only problem i've had so far is the rear window rattling... i checked it out before i left for school, and it seems like the bottom left of the rear window is slightly loose... just needs to be glued better i guess

ill take it in during spring break when im home

other than that, no problems for me (but i only have 700 miles on it or so)

I've got over 2000miles on my 55, and no problems as of yet. I've had it since September, haven't driven it for a month due to the snow over here however...
If you have a lemon, get it replaced!

I purchased my SLK350 in the beginning of this month and it currently has 300 miles on it. The only problem I have noticed is the windows not rolling up properly at times and the passenger side sideview to lowering when I put the car in reverse. Minor problems, but problems nonetheless

MASA:
Do you have the upgraded seat with memory package? Otherwise the passenger mirror parking option won't be there...

If you have it, it can be programed on or off...see the owners manual...

Yes, I do have the upgraded seats w/ the memory package, but did not know it can be turned off/on. I will look into the owners manual ASAP. Thanks for your help.

Motzkoman,

You seem to be extremely knowledgable about these vehicles. Do you know if the seat memory is set with the key as well. I know some cars if you set the memory position with a key in the ingition it will remember those positions when that key unlocks the car. Do these cars have that option?

the slk350 has key-based seat memory if you choose to enable it.. only works with the first seat memory button (out of 3) tho i believe

When you put it in reverse the mirror lowers is actually an added feature to help you parrelle park. It is NOT a defect. I assume you have the power seats and steering. As far as windows goes, they might need to be resetted. Do that by rolling it all the way down and hold it there for 2 seconds or so, and again for all the way up. That should fix the problem. You are is fine... no defects.

BostonSLK350:
Yes the seat memory has key-dependency. It is explained on page #143 of the US Owners Manual...

You have obviously taken the advice RTFM to heart. Are you a technician or a human computer?

Does anyone know if the owners manual is availible anywhere online?

One more question I have is in regards to the passenger side, sideview mirrors. On the drivers side there is a black lining that surrounds the actual mirror inside the housing, but on my passenger side it is only the mirror w/o anything around it. Is this normal? I do have the Memory Package in which the sideview folds down. Thanks again in advance.

You know MASA, I have noticed the same thing with my mirrors. My guess is that their supplier of the right mirrors (the "caution objects are closer than they appear" one) may be different, but that is only a guess. Regardless, it seems normal...
