This is clearly a lemon car. Exchange for a good one or get a refund. Don't let the dealer get away with it!

Start e-mailing MBUSA. Whine, scream, and puff until you get your car fixed.

Not two weeks ago I purchased a 2012 SLK 350 with black exterior and ash-gray interior equipped with the premium package. Three days after I did so, the car had to be towed because a sensor in the vario-roof malfunctioned, leaving the roof not fully closed and frozen (the trunk electronically unopenable too). When I got the car back days later it kept stalling when I moved the gear shift from P - D, park to drive. For more than twenty minutes it wouldn't move. The only way to get it going was to move in reverse and then it went into drive without a problem. The car is now back in the service department, a sensor has been taken out of a demo SLK, but there's an ominous silence from the department about the status of the engine. The car with just 600kms on it has been in my possession for under two weeks. Has anyone been in this position with a just-purchased vehicle? Any advice much appreciated.
Update: My 2012 SLK has been back in the service center for almost three weeks. The lovely beast kept stalling. Part on order from Germany. Minor issues also being repaired: an inordinate amount of clicking and clacking from the plastics in the console (which has since been lined with felt); side mirror squeeks when closing (the whole unit has been replaced); cover of fuse box in trunk wasn't staying closed--that's been fixed too; a whirring sound in some of the vents (as yet unfixed). To say nothing about the gray-leather seats which become discolored in a mere 2-3 days use even if I'm wearing gray pants!

So, since purchasing this car on June 17th, it has been in for repairs no less than six times and the last time for a duration of what will be three weeks. I've requested that the MB dealership give me a new car--they won't; I've requested my money back--also a no go--if the car once returned to me doesn't do what it's supposed to do, then what? Lawyers? Vehicle Sales Authority?

I'll add that all of the demos I've driven this past while--B200's and GLK 350's--have the same clicking and clacking in the dash / console, apparently an unfortunate feature of the fresh-off-the-line 2012 fleet, or at least of those I've driven.

Those of you ecstatic about your new 2012 SLK--enjoy! Alas, I've not yet been able to do so, but if any of the malfunctions I've described beset your new brute beauties please let me know. I was told that the cause of the stalling is something that "Germany is very interested in ... the same problem has been occurring ... in other models." I wonder if those last three words I quote verbatim were tagged on to deflect my inevitable question--are the problems ruining my joy of buying this car widespread?

Thanx for reading.

August 11: I've just been told that the new torque converter has arrived but that it will take another week to have it installed since it arrived from Germany without bolts needed for installation. When the car is returned to me next week it will have been in the service center for 28 days. I bought the car on June 17th and have barely driven it.

Any Slk2012-owners out there having issues with your new cars?

Hello Fellow Slk 2012 Roadster,

How's your car working? Since getting mine in late June it's been in and out of the service center for repairs 6-7 times! A new torque-converter has been issued--mine will be installed next week. By the time I get it back it will have been in service for almost a month. I'm driving a GLK which feels like driving a boat. So, just curious to see if other 2012Slk drivers have had any problems.

Thanks for reading and all best with your glorious car.

2012 SLK 350
The wife and I just recently leased a 2012 SLK 350 from Fletcher Jones here in SoCal. It has been a great vehicle thus far. The only complaint is the navigation system doesn't boot up. When you press and hold the Back button, the screen just turns black. When the navigation starts, it works extremely well. But it's so inconsistent if it starts. Otherwise, love the redesigned look. A friend had an older SLK, and I didn't care for it much. I'm 6' 3", and I barely fit in his older 2005 SLK. I can easily fit in the 2012.

Hi - I'm sure all you lucky owners love your new 2012 SLK350s but I'm sorry to say I don't like the front end of it, I prefer the beefier, meaner look of my 2007.

Hey Roadster - I'm really sorry to hear of your problems and hope you get them sorted out. It's good to see the sound advice you've been given by the members here and I really feel the dealership should change the car or refund you. When you're paying that kind of money for a new car you expect it to work!!!

@SMG: Sorry, I completely disagree! The new front makes it look meaner than previous models. Love the redesigned 2012 look.

But............ I don't think this is a good example, I do admit that some other models do look better than this but this is the 1st picture I saw.

Cool stalling 2012 SLK 350

Hi all,
I got on line looking to see if others are having the same trouble I am having with my new SLK 350. I have had the car for 7 weeks and have 2240 miles on her, but, right from the start (1st week) it was stalling when I try to put her in gear. I took it back to the dealer and they told me they could find no problem... OK... I took it home and over the last 4 weeks the problem has gotten worse. when started the tack is all over the place and the car just shakes, when you try to put it in gear, it stalls, did it to me 4 times this morning, before it finely went into gear and moved. Looking on line, I see I am not the only one with this gripe.
Has anyone got the problem and got it fixed???
Also the trim piece on the drivers side door that wipes the window keeps falling off when the door is closed from the outside... uggg... this is my first MB, so far I am NOT impressed...

Torque Converter

Hello artguy1961,

What you describe occurring with your new SLK 350--stalling when you try to put 'er in gear, the tack is all over the place and the car shaking--I know all too well. For a time when these symptoms occurred all I could do was put it in reverse for then it wouldn't stall. These issues happened only when I was parked on an incline for some reason. Anyway, the torque converter was replaced and the problems went away--but for one time, the day after I get 'er back when it stalled once without doing all that scary shaking.

About the trim--mine's been fine, but in the three months since purchasing my black beauty, more than a dozen small things drove me crazy. I had parts of the dash and console backed by felt to reduce all the creaking and clicking and clacking--the beast sounded worse than my first car, a '79 diesel rabbit I bought for $400, a car that worked better during the first three months than my SLK! On day two of driving the SLK the roof wouldn't close ... a long-distant towing required, side-mirrors squeeked, fuse-box lid wouldn't stay shut, ashgray seats becoming discolored after 2-3 days' usage.

Though I was unable to get a replacement or refund so long as the stalling wouldn't occur under the supervision of a MB mechanic--quite a self-serving policy to be sure--I hounded service center staff until the car was in working order. Since then the car has been fantastic. I got so paranoid for a while during the summer (I bought it in late June) that I was convinced the mechanics screwed around with the torque converter just so the service center manager could drive it all summer while I went through any number of 'courtesy' cars, all 2012 demos, all with crickly-crack-cracking going on in the console.

I was able to get a few gew-ga's from 'em for free--the wind-blocker screen, for instance, was no charge, as were licence-plate holders, a MB cup, the sort of bling admittedly not-so ameliorating a form of compensation but what can I say: I was being given the run around and pushed 'em all I could.

I don't regret getting the car though. Once it works it really goes, the sound of the engine in tunnels being an especial thrill.

All best and don't forget fall-backs such as the Vehicle Sales Authority or its equivalent where you are.

I cannot believe a brand new SLK can have sooo many fundamental problems! it's scary & makes you wonder how much QC they did on it when it rolled out of the production line

BTW where are they made in general?

Built in Bremen. Sub-assemblies come from various other plants in Germany.
