Just curious, what're your thoughts about the plexiglass windscreen? Is it actually worth the $500 or so you pay for it?

I hear its very nice, but I just can't overcome the now $635 MB is asking for it....its a piece of clear plastic for gawds sake! It just seems silly to pay that much money for a piece of plastic .

OMG! I thought $400 was alot for it. I think I was like the 2nd one to get one, at least on this board. But its necessary, proven by the fact that they know they have you by the nuts as they hike up the price. And it adds to the looks of the car. Here's a some pictures -

I got one and it looks great. I asked the sales manager to give me a break on the price and he told the parts department to take off 25 percent. You might try asking. Is it worth the price they're asking? I don't think so. But it looks great and it works and what choice do we have.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but about the time they updated the MBUSA site with the SL280 and '06 models, the Windscreen dropped back down to $449.

hey guys,

So, what exactly does the windscreen do for the car? Less wind resistance? Please let me know, cuz it seems fine without it.

It does similar to the standard wind "sock", the black stretchy material thing.

Just looks better and works at night with cars with headlights coming from behind..

It decreases the amount of wind buffetting into the c0ckpit while driving with the top down at higher speeds.

Nothing to do with wind resistance.

Actually not true. You will get a minor decrease in wind resistance with the windscreen in place, but it is not worth worrying about.

P.S. Has anybody used the $72 version available on eBay?

Huh? I'll take a real $ bet you put the car in a wind tunnel and measure coefficient of drag with and with the plexi windscreen between the roll bars and you will not see ANY measureable difference.

Just checked with me dealer, no reduction in price so far for the MB plexi-glass windscreen for the SLK.
Wish this was less than $600.00+, at that price it's way too expensive for me.

I work for LUxury Motors and at this location we are partners with Mercedes Benz of Hoffman Estates in Illinois and if I could get some interest I can have my buddy get as much of a discount as possible for all of us. I have been a member for a while and have sold stuff in the past and have had no problems so if interested someone start a thread and we'll take it from there --Afrim Delisi

Depending on cost....

Depending on discount, and cost ... I am interested in the windscreen. I am likely to get mine in St. Louis, but do get to Chicago often enough to make it worth waiting a bit to get one.

Chitown,

if you can get a group-buy discount going, definitely count me in.

It would be cooler if it were thick polycarbonate laminate. Bullet-proof, for that extra James Bond factor.

Seriously, my one gripe with it is that the plastic is thin and very flexible, and tends to vibrate in wind buffeting which causes reflections in the rear-view mirror.

Mine doesn't buffet - are you sure its on right? Mine started to come off on the fwy because the carwash guy must have taken it off and put it on backwards. Its hard to tell which way it goes. Also, I have the official MB one which goes on a little different than some of the others out there. I like the look better than any others I've seen so I paid the $400 for it.

Bloflin, the mbusa site still lists the price as $653 for the SLK55. Where are you getting that?

Look at the post date, that was 3+ months ago. Things change.

I don't remember the price that I paid but shortly after purchasing our SLK350, I bought TWO windscreen's from eBay - one clear, one bronze tinted - and a cloth carrying case (for the one not currently in use). The total cost was a little under $150.

They attach with four velcro straps that wrap around the roll bars. IMO, they greatly reduce the wind noise in the c0ckpit while driving.

If you go this route, ensure that they are made for the SLK350. At the time I bought, the SLK350 was just out and they were advertised to fit SLK's. I bought two and since they were actually made for the SLK230/320, they were a little wider than needed for the SLK350. The first one cracked (but still usable) when I closed the roof with the screen in place. I trimmed the width of the second one and it works fine.

The UK price for the plexiglass MB screen is about $375 plus tax (no tax would be payable if exporting to the US). You would probably be better off trying to find a UK dealer who will ship to the US.

I don't know why this particular item is cheaper in the UK - normally it's the other way around. For example my loaded SLK55 cost just under $100K including taxes.
