Question Ipod

Has anyone had the Ipod intergration kit fitted into their car? My MB dealer quoted me a figure of £145 for the kit and a further £200 for the installation (~$600 in total)!!! They reckon it's a 2hr-long job!?! I'm tempted to buy the parts myself and get someone else to install it - any thoughts/help/advice? If anyone has some photos of the dock positioned in the glove box I would be very grateful. I am particularly keen to know whether the Ipod can be positioned into the glove box with the 6-disc CD changer left in?

...200 and 145 equals 600?!?!?!

The 2 hour job sound about right...and in the SLK the Ipod is suposed to go in the center armrest - not in the glovebox...

greetingz,
It can go either way. I had mine installed in the glove box and I like it that way.

iPod scheduled install

I have an appointment for next Friday (11/11) to have the MB iPod kit installed by the dealer. It goes in the glovebox on my car ('06 E350), and will cost me $630 (parts and labor). It seems like a total rip-off, but I want to have it and don't see a good alternative solution out there. I could of course just use the AUX stereo-mini port in the glove box, but I don't get the battery charged, have the steering wheel and COMAND control functionality or convenience.

I'm curious to know what other people are doing about this (going the dealer route like I am vs. another brand kit/install vs. a self-engineered option)?

that is a fair price comsidering the amount of work it takes to get that kit installed in the E-class (a lot more work then an ipod install in an SLK)

MBenzNL, have you looked at doing an install in the "pigeonhole" drawer (above the COMAND screen, where the cupholder is in US cars)? Seems like the IPOD would fit and seems like the installation would be much easier as you would not have to take the whole middle console and rear hatch apart.

yes, I looked at that but as that is a moving part - I don't want to put a fairly stiff cable in there that will end up jamming that drawer 4 out of 5 times one opens/closes it...it didn't look like it would be suiteable for that.

greetingz,
Sorry, I don't follow. The "pigeonhole" were the Ipod would sit doesn't move it's just a hole. The only moving part is the front trim that moves up to reveal the hole. But there would be not anything connected to that.

Here's a (bad) pic from my cell phone, with a pair of eyeglasses sticking out.

Cool

I have the Harman/Kardon upgrade and the Ipod jack is in the glove box. I assumed that it came with the stereo, when the salesman showed it to me when I bought the car.
I didn't think anything about it till I saw this thread.
Maybe you should check your glove box if you have the Harman/Kardon stereo?

Cubby,

Hey bud, I think you're missing the point about this thread. We all know that there is an aux-in jack in the glovebox. People are simply looking into alternate means of where the Ipod could go with the Ipod kit.

I like the location Blofin suggests and even where MB suggests. It will be protected from damage but not from theft should you leave your top down. Therefore, I think I'll be going the glovebox route.
