Non-kill Story

Just a quick story.

Yesterday (Sunday) out driving. Top down, AC on, passenger with me. Turned onto the "highway" (still has stop lights, though), talking with my passenger, I'm in the right lane. Coming up on a Nissan 240SX, in the left lane. Can see two big fat exhaust pipes and figure it's another "weedeater". Didn't really pay attention, that it was waiting for me in the left lane, we were just cruising about 40mph. I come abreast, and he punches it and starts moving out. I floor it (remember not in "race" mode, with top down, AC on and passenger). I catch to his back bumper and stay there. Can't get ahead, but not dropping off either. Then about 100 or so he's slowly pulling away. At 120mph, I back off, traffic and traffic lights ahead.

I sure wanted to know what he had in there, as it sure wasn't stock and wasn't just exhaust pipes.

At the light we had a 15 second chat. All I caught was works for BoostLogic www.boostlogic.com . Had a turbo, and he was making 383HP at the rear wheel.

Check them out they have a Supra they did that does the 1/4 in 8.47sec @ 163.5mph. They have some videos, also.

What does the SLK55 make at the rear wheel?

Yikes! 383hp in that light car would make for a rocket! I have a 300 zx and there are some tt ones out there pulling gigantic hp numbers, it's a great engine to boost. Thanks for sharing...

My stock 55 dyno'd at 295 hp to the rear wheels (before mods.) in about 80 degrees and low humidity.

You should have started from a dead stop. Big turbos always have an advantage on the roll.

You most likely ran into a 240SX w/ an SR20DET transplant. It's a 4-banger, 2.0L motor that can handle lots of boost.

Yep. But it wasn't planned, I was talking to my passenger and he must have spotted me and slowed down to wait for me. So he was advantaged being in prime turbo boost range. No doubt it would have been different from a dead stop.

Don't know it was a 15 second thru the windows conversation at the next stop light. The web site doesn't give much info on that car. I think I may try and locate him at the company and get more details.

Not punked, it was fun. But, definitely set me up. I imagine he was surprised I caught his head start and hung on his bumper.

Plenty of Japanese cars which is quite nice to drive.

I personally like the MX5 and S2000 because you produce some sweet sensations.

Yep, I like the manual trans. of the S2000, the best in the world... in my opinion, (jap crap = no presence on the road) like the Benz or any german car.

I would not call it Jap crap...it's not like Benz's quality is ANY better than your run-of the-mill Camry. Let's get real...talk about snob!

"Presence" - they look like everything else on the road for Chris' sake!!!

MB, for the most part, has one thing going for...."...ooooo, look at me, look what I'm driving" I'm driving something the rest of the 'chattel' cannot afford...

No longer car shopping...
The 240's are a tuner's dream

That guy probably did have an engine transplant as well as the twin torbo's in order to make that kind of HP. The other "sleeper" to be on the lookout for are the 944 Turbos. I had a guy in a moderately modified one hang with my CLK55 all the way up to 150. If he had done extensive mods he may have given even the SLK55 a tough run.

Well I tracked him down and talked with him. Real nice guy. Part of the Japanese car street scene here in Austin. Here is their personal website: www.ateamwangan.com

Weirdest part is, he lives in my neighborhood.

They buy old worthless Japanese cars (one of them for $500.00) and then rebuild them.

He does have an engine transplant, but just to the Japanese version of the stock 240SX engine, then he did the aftermarket work:

I think that's one BADASS car!!!
