ECU remap from DMS Automotive

Guys,

First post here, getting my 55AMG in 4 weeks.

Here in the UK we have a company called DMS Autmotive. They specialise in ECU remaps for BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. They have had very good reviews on turbo diesel cars like the BMW 535D as an example (272 to 334 bhp). They also do a lot of tuning for the Porsche 996 Turbo with great reviews.

I rang them about the SLK and they do a remap which they reckon takes BHP up to 399, torque up to 397lb/ft and removal of the speed limiter. This will only cost £800ish ($1500) and is undetectable by the dealer. They even come to your workplace to do the remap.

Having read a lot on this forum I am now doubting their claims. Renntech, Kleeman etc. do straight ECU remaps but they cost double the amount and they only claim 10bhp increase and 20lb/ft in torque. Are these guys talking bull or are companies like Renntech and Kleeman just overpriced? Would be interesting to know peoples thoughts.

Here's their website: www.dmsautomotive.com

RENNtech and Kleemann are probably overpriced. I did the RENNtech ECU upgrade among other minor mods. But the increases claimed by DMS must be bogus. The ECU simply cannot improve a NA engine that much.

ECU remaps on naturallly aspirated cars are usually a waste of money as they do very little.

Unless you get a new intake/headers to go along with it, the gains will always be minimal.

SLK 55 AMG
If they were talking about HP numbers for the European model (360hp), then an extra 22hp might be belieavable. But I doubt the ECU can net up to 27hp... As was mentioned, it's an NA car.

Unless someone showed my before and after dynos pwerformed by someone not associated with the manufacturer, I call BS on anything near that amount of power.

A couple of years ago, Car&Driver did a test on ECUs that were sold for a variety of Naturally aspirated cars. In EVERY car they tested, there was absolutely no gain. Some even lost power. In every case, the manufacturer was claiming big gains and they are were proven to be just hype with no truth to it at all.

How do you know it was faster?

Did you take it to the strip before and after the ECU swap? How much was the MPH increase in your trap speed. This is the only way you would know it was faster.

10hp+

I have owned Porsche 996 and 997 and now have a SLK55. No ECU will net you more than 10-12hps on normally aspirated engine in that horsepower range. You would get a 25+range with a turbo charged engine...maybe they mis-understood you on what car you owned SLK vs SL.

Agree that a nice air intake upgrade would work its charm with an ECU upgrade. The upgrade should give you an additional kick in the mid-hig range but nothing too spectacular. A combo: ECU+air intake+headers will do the trick.

I am still breakin in the engine on my SLK and will do a that combo on mine.

Best
