Just bought SLK55

Just bought a black with black/red interior new SLK 55 (the combo i really wanted!!)....and coming from a c32 I must say this car is incredably fun. I loved the c32 but this thing is just so damn fun to drive...sounds amazing, looks amazing, and damn is it fast. Clearly faster off the line then the c32 but even on the highway...it feels like it pulls quite a bit harder....very pleased with my purchase thus far. Anyone have any thoughts on the speed after 60mph...if youve had other fast cars id be curious how u feel the slk55 compares to them?

Old man had a 02 carrera c4s and this is FAR faster on the highway and off the line...with the exception of the e55 supercharged and the bentley gt (old mans ride) i have yet to drive a car that feels this fast (and up to 60mph the slk55 feel just as fast as those cars).

The noise and feel indeed make this car feel fast. Supposedly 4.3 seconds 0-60 if you know how to launch it. The torque helps immensely.

I've driven some other fast cars (Ferrari's and the like), and the SLK can hang in there with the best of them.

If you have an extra 4k to spare, you can upgrade the headers and ECU for up to 400hp, safely

Good luck and wttc (welcome to the club)!

warranty for aftermarket performance upgrades

The aftermarket suppliers will warranty the car and their upgrades. That is something you pay for upfront when you upgrade for performance. That is also why these upgrades for what amounts to minimally increased performance are extremely expensive. Only you can decide if the increased performance is worth it to you. You will not get any boost in your resale value either. You will have the satisfaction and pleasure of driving your upgraded car. That alone should drive your decision. Enjoy!! And welcome to the MBWorld SLK 55 forum.

BTW, I love mine just the way it is with a few cosmetic upgrades. You will love yours too.

Congratulations on your car. Why dont you stop by Kronen?! We can have Jesse come by too! He's going to have the Renntech supercharger kit installed. Oh yeah, btw, Renntech team might be here in few weeks time!

congrats. I have had mine for 6 months and it still feels very new. The size of the SLK makes it one of the best in the AMG lineup to drive.....and the noise never gets old.

best

Yeah, I swear Ive heard an SLR today and the noice is remarkable but at WOT it sounds a bit different than the SLK due to the supercharger but still the exhaust noise is kind of the same!

An SLR at full throttle, sounds like a WWII fighter plane......IMHO, it has the best exhaust note out there from a V8.

Thanks all.

Do you guys put on the wind deflector for top down driving?

anyone ever do over 130mph? Curious how the car feels at very high speeds.

I took the SLK up to max speed (limited to 155mph). It is very stable. In fact, I achieved this on 6th gear (7th should bring you up to 180mph or so, if the limiter was deactivated).

The Wind Deflector is quite effective. It's nice to have when the weather is still a bit chilly due to wind turbulence. I'd never use it in summer.

shinigami,

If the headers and ECU do you have any idea what the 0 to 60 times and 1/4 mile will become?

I don't think anyone knows for sure...

In the older model SLK 230K, a simple pulley upgrade would give people 30 extra hp. Some who tested their 0-60 times, reported gains of between .2 and .3 seconds or so (it dropped from roughly 7.2 seconds to high 6's).

The 55 is a lot heavier by several hundred kilos, so I expect the 0-60 times to improve by a maximum of .2 seconds. Most likely closer to .1.

However, the more free flowing headers do make it much easier for the engine to breath, so throttle response and noise should be improved greatly. That in itself should be quite nice to have.

Remember, the 55 supposedly is a 4.9 second car according to the ultra concervative MB. However, user drag times show that it can be as fast as 4.3 seconds.

So if you've got the right kind of 55, you could be looking at maybe 4.1 seconds 0-60. However, this would require good launch procedures. A more realistic time of 4.5-4.7 is what you're looking at.

The SLK has two problems. The first one being the tire size at the rear. They are too skinny for proper launches, and you really need wider tread.
The second problem is the traditional MB ESP system which applies the brakes if it senses wheel spin. This slows you down in turn and you get poorer launches, so by spending approximately $1500 more, you can have an LSD system which improves traction.
