we don't ask enough questions about the part we're buying and can end up
buying something that could have been clarified during the shopping process.
with suspension mods, you're usually trying to adjust 1) ride height, 2) spring
rate (pounds simple/progressive), 3) damping (compression/rebound).
if you look for the specs (or ask the manuf) you will get this info before investing
in separate spring/shock combo. to some degree, you might want to do the same
for the coilovers....and to determine min/max adjustment range. but with the
coilovers, you can purchase in more casual/lazy fashion as your preferences will
likely be within the design range. also, for the tinkerer, the coilovers will
allow you to change your mind, tweak, etc for the conditions and ride you
want, eg summer vs winter, sport v comfort, as well as weight differential....
even independantly so for each corner of the vehicle e.g to induce oversteer.
but it is also very possible for folks not constantly tinkering.....to ask the
poundage rate for the springs, compare this with factory springs, and still get
a very well balanced suspension right off. it's not as if every person has the
inclination or need to adjust their suspension regularly every several months
or so. for those who do study the tech specs and instead of paying $2k
you might do just as well for $300.
in other words, the devil is in the details. so dont just read the glamorous
text of the web site, read and/or ask for the poundage measure as well.
