This Site Is Dead!
Where the hell has everyone gone!!!!?
I'm with you, Beleriand. As a prospective owner of an SLK55 that I'm picking up as soon as the Dragonsnake is sold this Memorial Day weekend (see http://www.shelbyford.com/wimtoday.html - bring at least a million!), I used to look in on the forum almost every day. Now it's a couple of times a week.
The reason I'm buying the SLK55 over the bigger Merc roadsters isn't so much a question of money. It's because I wouldn't be caught dead in one of those barges. The 55 looks to me like a kind of rogue Mercedes - the black sheep in a family of checkered pants, country club conveyances (with the possible exception of the V12). The 55 won't have the same in-your-face quality that the Dragonsnake had when I first licensed her for the street back in 1967. Some 400 HP in a 2,200 lbs car with big Cobra lettering on the side is hard to argue with, even today. But I'm hoping the new car will be raucous enough and agile enough and quick enough to at least have some fun with on the back-country roads of upstate New York, without getting dusted by some hopped-up rice rocket.
Not much of a controversy starter, Beleriand, but let me ask you this: What was Mercedes thinking when they offered the $6,000 Performance Package without throwing in at least a few extra ponies? I would gladly have paid $8-10,000 extra for the taughter suspension and better brakes (and harsher ride), but not without also getting a "Performance" upgrade in the engine compartment.

Our cars are relatively reliable and trouble free.
I hang out at the Audi boards and there is another problem every ten minutes with their cars. I guess no news is good news. Although I was hoping to get some replies on the illegal downpipe thread.
The good news is that SLK's are very well built, reliable cars without the problems to talk about like the other models. On the corvette forum those owners are all screaming about either batteries going dead (for no reason) or better yet - the targa roofs coming unglued and flying off the car
Finally, I agree with the post above about the "Peformance Package" - no additional power = no interest.
If you want to read about the roofs flying of the new C6 Corvette (which GM has sworn is the best built Vette yet) here is the link:
