Why did the Vette let up near the end? I wonder if the SLK55 was reeling her in too much? Just wondering what would have happened a little later.
Either way, they're both amazing cars. Z06 is hard to beat! However, I'd take the S8 anyday.

This race took pace in Dubai....pretty hot place. FI cars do better when its cool outside where their blowers or turbos operate more efficiently. In any case, it shows you how fast a stock Z06 is. Those things are true all around strong track cars (interiors just aren't all that great, but hey, its a good deal for ~$70k)). I believe Ranger on the Corvette Forum ran an 11.3 quarter trapping 128 mph.....STOCK. That is pretty impressive.
Good vid - thanks for posting!

The Z06 is a very potent car. Can't go wrong with a huuuuge engine and low weight
From what I've heard, the 505hp of the Z06 is also quite underrated... it could very well be more. The SLK needs those 85 extra ponies due to the few hundred kilos more that it needs to haul around!

Good runs, but I think we can all agree that the Z06 should have done a little better given:
1) There was an even start (SL went before 3)
2) Z06 had its windows up
3) Z06 did not start at 3K rpms

Disappointing I think:
Mercedes SLK weighs 340O lbs and claims 590 hp or 5.76 pounds per horsepower.
Vette weighs 3150 and rated at "just" 505 hp or 6.23 pounds per horspower.
Merc jumped the start and the Vette STILL pulled past the Merc! Given it's better power to weight ratio Merc should have been faster and should not have been passed by the Vette.
This tells me the claimed 590 hp ain't.

ZO6s are also a little under rated at 505Hp. They put down, on avg, ~450 rwhp = 530 Hp @ the crank given a 15% drivetrain loss.
Look at the vid - the Merc went ON the 3rd honk. Maybe the C6 didn't hammer it in time but the Merc didn't "cheat"....he went on honk #3. The Merc also looked to be gaining at the end (he was even when the ZO6 pulled out of it which is surprising given the Vette's better Cd). In any case, it looked like a pretty tight race to me.

And frankly....who really cares - just not a big deal.
Ricker, the SLK timed it ON the 3rd honk (which is what you are supposed to do ). Its TIMING to a rythem (a honking sound on a rolling start or the visual timing of the tree lights @ the track)......This is how you get a good 60' time....you anticipate & hit it right as the tree goes green (if you wait to "see" the light...your 60' time is going to be above 2 sec).

Exactly. The race was pretty evenly matched (neither car walked the other).

I think you guys are also right - sounded like the SLK was manually shifting. WTF is up with that? Just point & shoot the thang. I dunno - it "sounded'" like he was trying to be Jaun Fangio but I could be wrong.

Just my opinion? Besides, we are talking about a blown V8 in the SLK. Mod the Z & its GAME OVER.....it would not even be close. See ya Ricker.

No offense or anything, but you've been here since 2003, have almost 4,000 posts and don't know what kind of transmission the SLK55 AMG has? Of course its not a manual, AMG does not make manual transmissions period.

I'm pretty sure the reason why the Z suddenly catched on at one point, was due to the guy manually shifting the SLK too early... But then after this first error, the SLK began to reel the Z in a bit.
The Z gearbox lets you do minimal gear changes due to the spacing, so this helps to keep it running fast as well.

been wanting a Z for some time now. To add to my collection. but the $10+K over msrp that they want is just stupid on the dealers part.

Actually, it IS an automatic, but you can override it to some degree with the paddle/buttons on the wheel.

Oh I knew the SLK55 has a 7 speed auto. It was the fact that it sounded like the guy was shifting manually (which he was) and the car was so highly tuned. I thought there was a possibility he did a transmission swap. Maybe I should have stated my question better.
