The SL55, though fast, is no sports car. It's very heavy. You'd think being a 2 door sporty looking car that it would be light, but the fact is that it outweighs my E55 by quite a bit. The suspension and ride is still soft, it's a cruiser is what it is. Even the SL65; after a test drive I had to decide agasint it. The power is there but it's about as sporty as a barge. I wanted something with more "feel" and fun factor to it and unfortunalty Mercedes only makes one thing that could be called a sports car and that is the SLK55.
That's what people mean when they say comparing an SLK to an SL is silly, they really are very different cars. You just have to decide on what you want. If you're after sportyness you will not be happy with the SL. If you want a luxury cruiser the SL will fit the bill nicely.

the SL55 is a completely different story performance wise. you're talking about $60k MORE than an SL500 (used). not to mention an additional 200+ horses. even if it has 510 bhp and 530 lb/ft, it still doesn't help the fact that the SL is an ugly, heavy and again SLOW as **** for the 130-140k dollars. there are much better alternatives to the SL models. (pretty much every other car in its price range)

And as far as sound goes, I'd say my SLK sounds better 80-90% of the time. The 997 TT I drove sounded boring almost all the time, it was only when you went into overboost that the exhaust emitted a rather interesting "thunderous" noise, but that never lasted all that long...

Yup, looks are purely objective, and I'm not one who likes the Porsche look all that much. They're not ugly, but just not very interesting in my eyes.

I agree the 997TT sounds boring at first, though just look at the video's online after the over boost it starts to sound racy.

so you don't own a benz anymore?? it'd be interesting if we can run a 1/4 mile drag against each other. i know from timeslips that SLK55 and carrera s, run about the same 1/4 mile ET (around 12.6ish). i've been able to pull off a 4.3 second 0-60mph time with upgraded eagle f1s. i am in the LA area so it'd be easy to find a place to meet up. i'd like to see your car in person as well.

i guess it depends on the driver. but i agree with you on whole shifting thing. for the 55, it's just pop it on s-mode and mash the throttle. if i do get a chance to do it i will definately have one of my friend record it and post over at all the forums.
